Rear sight placement is retarded. It should be on the upper receiver, not the handguard. Mounting the rear sight on the handguard completely negates any benefit you would receive by having your front sight mounted straight to the barrel via that gas block. If you mounted that rear sight on the handguard because it is too tall when folded to fit under your optic, then you need to get a different rear sight.
Also, how much does your rifle weigh, as pictured?
That's just a for stowage. It won't fit under the rear aperture. If I ever get into a situation where I need to take off LPVO to switch to BUIS, then I'll have enough time to move the BUIS.
Just get a different rear sight. Magpul MBUS is good, cheap, light weight, and folds flat enough to fit under that optic. If you're in a situation where your optic fails, you are not going to have enough time to unmount and remount that rear sight, and even if you do, it won't be zeroed.
8lbs + 1.5lbs optic/mount + .5lb bipod + sling puts you well over 10lbs, unloaded. Add a 30rd mag (loaded pmag is 1lb) and you're over 11lbs. That's pretty heavy for an AR. The first thing I'd change, other than the rear sight, is the stock, you could probably drop a full pound by going with an MFT minimalist stock. Removing the bipod would help a lot too, and you really don't need it.
Perfect balance isn't all it's cracked up to be. Having a slight weight bias towards the muzzle is actually helpful, especially if you're running a birdcage flash hider instead of a muzzle brake or a suppressor.
The only thing I would add to this build is a light. Also maybe some rail covers, because if you do any amount of rapid fire with this thing, it's going to heat up fast. Maybe a forward pistol grip or hand stop too, if you're into that sort of thing.
The way I see it, if the target gets close enough to engage close quarters, and my optic fails, sidearm.
If I have enough time to remove a broken optic, then I have enough time to move around the rear sight. And what makes you think that it won't maintain zero? I've swapped around optics plenty, mount it in the same 1913 slot and rock and roll.
Heavy gun simply means get stronger. Once upon a time I was a SAW gunner. 10 lbs ain't shit.
And light... hmmmmm.... Maybe. What's an inexpensive but still quality option? I was about to say that I wouldn't be entering and cleaning buildings with a long gun, but I definitely did do that in Iraq with an M16A4.
Backup irons are good for way more than just close quarters. A rifleman of average skill level should be able to nail a torso shot with irons out to a couple hundred yards.
Maybe, but I'm not willing to take that risk. My primary has offset irons so that I don't even have to waste time removing the optic.
lol somehow I knew you were going to say you used to carry a SAW. 10+lbs isn't horrible, but when you can build a significantly lighter AR for less money than you spent on the build you posted, it just doesn't seem practical not to. That's just my take on it though, and I'm just some douche on the internet. My primary rifle is about 8lbs fully equipped but unloaded. 2-3lbs doesn't sound like much, but every little bit counts imo. My lightest AR is my recreational backpacking build, at about 5.2lbs fully equipped (sights, light, red dot, sling) but unloaded. Carrying that thing is a breeze.
There are a lot of good lights out there, it all depends on how much you want to spend.
On the high end is stuff like Cloud Defensive or Surefire or Arisaka, which all the Gucci gun fags suck off endlessly, but once you get it all set up with a tape switch and all that, you're looking at maybe around $300-$500+... for a fucking light.
Streamlight is far more affordable, but some seem to disregard them as not "good enough". My experience is that Streamlight makes great lights. The TLR-1 HL ($140ish) is solid, but the tape switch for it is crap, but is also really not necessary. The Protac HL-X ($120ish) is great, and has a good tape switch, but is a little heavy, but not really any more than a Surefire light. The Protac is a great deal for the money.
If you want a very bright, very light weight light on a low budget, look into the Nitecore MT10C, paired with a 1" light mount, such as the Arisaka M-lok light mount. This combo will run you about $85-$95 total (unless prices have gone up recently. There are also cheaper mounts out there), and is maybe one of the best bang for you buck options. I can't guarantee that this light is as durable as some of the more expensive options, but the ones I own, and have beat on some, have held up well so far. I haven't tried the tape switch for it, but it looks like shit. Generally, I'm totally fine with simply pushing a button on the tail cap of a light. This is not a long range light, but is super bright at short range.
There are a million lights out there, and a million videos testing and comparing them if you want to do some research.

I like the stock, kind of counterweight for the front, it's heavy, but well balanced. I have a piston rifle that's lighter, but front heavy, so the front end wants to drift down.
What optic do youbuse? I was thinking of getting a longer range sight like you're rocking. Currently I have a holosun red dot with 3x magnifier. That's good for what I'll probably need it for (but hopefully I never have to use it), however I want to start practicing at longer ranges.

I carried an M16A4 for years and in combat. I liked it better than the M4. I put this together as a kind of modernized M16A4, I guess you would call it an M16A5.
Oh, so can definitely dig it. I built the wife as close as I could get to an A2. I carried one for quite a while, myself before the Army transitioned largely to the M4. I hated it cause it felt like a toy. Buuuut my main weapon was a 240H, which I slung out of the side of a Blackhawk. I guess that’s the main reason I prefer the 7.62x51, and the reason I got an AR-10.

Cool gas block choice.
Unecessarily heavy, and expensive, stock choice.
