You are right in your assertion that most modern music, at least the tracks given airplay, are complete trash designed for a level of intelligence that hovers slightly above nigger tier.

Man, this was middle school for me. I remember our school principal kicked off the talent show by performing this song. This was spine-curling cringe before cringe became a meme.

Anyway, you'll find a lot of songs are written intentionally for ambiguity. I don't consider it as having as much to do with malevolence (in many cases), as sheer laziness in song writing, combined with the 'money ball' labels play with writing for the statistics.

To me, this song says a couple of things:

1. I want you. I am willing to give you everything.

2. But you move like the tide, in and out, so don't count on getting what I'm willing to give if you aren't 'all in'.

It's a fairly simple, fairly sultry summer love song. Nothing atypical or notably dark here afaic.

I also find people tend to be quite hypocritical when it comes to criticizing lyricism in music they don't like, versus music they do like.

Lastly, we also need to consider that there has been a general and precipitous decline in writing in all genres since shortly after mid-20th-century. Different genres felt the effects at different rates.

I think about classic country versus today's country music. It's difficult to separate most male country stars today from their pop star counterparts. They just use twangy guitar tones and a slide guitar, and the same 'give me that ass' shit becomes 'country'.

Pop music, wether it's pop rock, country, hip hop etc. is as manufactured as a McDonald's cheeseburger. It doesn't have to make sense, it just needs to be palatable to the consumer. Very few "artists" write their own music, they're just attractive or interesting people that are used as a vehicle to deliver the product.
