The immediate benefit is that they don't need as much. But that only lasts as long as the lockdowns. After that demand spikes back up, so this alone would only provide temporary relief.

The less obvious benefit is that the global markets see the lockdowns, understand that demand is going to crater, at least in the short term, and react with a mass selloff... thus causing prices for everything to drop. This allows China to stock up on everything they need relatively cheaply. When the lockdowns end the prices will go back up, but they will have filled their reserves. They can even sell some of what they bought at significant profit.

When has the Chinese government cared about their own people? I be willing to be the ruling classes in China would let over 75% of their own people die if it benefited them is some way.
