Japan will still exist with 1 million people as much as it does with 100 million. They'll still speak Japanese, eat ramen, pretend to pray at shrines, and do all the things the Japanese have done for over a millennia. The US is already radically different in terms of culture, genetics, and governance from how it was even 100 years ago, and we will be even more radically different 100 years from now.

What reasons are there to believe that will happen?

How many people do they need? Maybe when it gets to 10 million young families will be able to afford a house.

So long as they keep their borders closed to immigration, it doesn't matter if their population declines.

So long as they don't resort to the importation of nigger faggots to solve their birthrate decline, Japan will remain Japan. It'll have a smaller, more focused population, but they'll solve the issues that brings within a generation. And that struggle will make them stronger in the fullness of time.

Or they can just import their replacements and cease to exist all together. Either or, I guess.
