Most people are passionate e partisans, they've given out their thinking to others who are more than willing to do their thinking for them.

A lot of it is poor self image, they imagine themselves so incompetent and those in charge so much more qualified that for the sake of poor self esteem they've just decided to let the experts tell them what to think.

Another part of it is emotional immaturity, they dont want to be responsible for their own statements and so they abdicate that to the authorities, and when the elites are punished, these guys will feel validated, because we didn't punish the npc who supported the current thing out of fear for responsibility.

These are the guys who go on a trivia show, volunteer no answers, then act as if they knew all the solutions. They are like children in the bodies of adults.

In a police state, everything is illegal, and therefore everyone is a criminal, even if they've somehow managed not to break any of your laws (purposefully made difficult by you never letting your citizens know what your laws are) you can still get them by fabricating something.

Most people think that it just ends there, but it doesn't, the police state will do whatever it can to paint you as the pinnacle of evil, they know that the evilness of anything, be it person, action, event, or idea, is entirely determined by how it is presented to the audience.

They'll use all the tricks of fiction writers to make the populace hate you, and just as someone might be made to hate the designated villains of some story, they will also hate the ones that the state decided to present as the newest symbol of wickedness, if they say that hating a fictional villain is no big deal, that's them telling you exactly how they would feel about hating you if you became an enemy of the state.

Most people see reality very similarly to how they see fiction, both are equally unreal (and thus insignificant) to them, unless their personal interests are directly affected, the reaction is largely the same.

The difference between a passive supporter of black lives matter and an active one, is that the passive supporters aren't interested in being a part of the show, the active ones want to join the cast, even if only as an extra.

BTW, to make someone hated by a fictional police state in a movie, the stare will say of dissidents that they have traits which are easily disproven upon actual encounter.
In real life, police states will not say that you look a certain way or have some behavior you could be counted on to display, rather, they'd talk about something your kind had done in the past, or some belief you hold, which is just a belief you actually hold but modified to be dangerous to others, such as white nationalists, rather than wanting a nation of their own, being portrayed as wanting to kill, enslave, or otherwise bring harm to everyone who isn't white.

Back to the beginning, the fact is that under a police state, the difference between being punished or not is whether the state players decide they want you punished.
The difference between a criminal and innocent is that no one in power has yet decided they want you to be declared a criminal.

You live with a sword hanging above your head, ready to drop at the moment you displease the wrong guy.

That why arbitrarily enforced laws are the clearest sign that your leaders are planning to assume control in the form of a totalitarian state.
They are still at the stage where the laws do not cover everything, but have arrived at the point where they get high off the power to decide when and where and upon whom the laws should be applied, by giving themselves the power to withhold justice in some cases.
To them the power of law exists as a tool for them to employ in pursuit of their goals, this is a display of machiavellianism and narcissism, two parts of the dark triad.

When we say that our society is sick, we mean mentally ill, in the way of cluster b personality disorders, in the way of the dark triad being put on display at an institutional level.
Think of your government as if it were a person, and it'd be diagnosed as one of the most dangerous kinds of people, the kind of psychopath that is the closest thing in this world to being objectively considered "evil".

Not a surprise, psychopaths like Trudeau are drawn to positions of power and influence, and are not just ocerreoresebted in places like politics, but also I'm the arts.
This explains both why do many countries are run by those who are psychopaths in the clinical sense, but also why they so often have a large background in artistic careers or circles.

It also fits because psychopaths are the ideal demagogues, owing to their infamous superficial charm and mask of sanity, and in the realm of democratic systems, demagogues inevitably win out.

This is why having a system that in any way hands the power over to the best influencers of popularity polls will inevitably lead to a tyranny of this wacky sort.
Where evil bastards seize absolute power on the backs of a non-productive underclass that they cater to, often involving the bribing of these bottomfeeders with the productivity of the working class, who they wage a war against.

It's always ending in the unproductive elite class at the top building a totalitarian state by stealing from the productive in the middle to buy more political power from the unproductive bottom class.

The elites produce nothing, they live off of passive incomes and are entirely dispensible, society could only improve with their culling, the the bottom class they court for power.

Makes sense, when the say of the stupid and useless and easily swayed is as good as the say of someone who is none of those things, why would you choose the latter as your demographic? Especially as the former category of people produce nothing, and desire the wealth produced by the latter category? It's a good opportunity to buy the first with the wealth of the second.
