The hierarchy is actually even more complicated than this as there are ranks found within each category regarding matter such as class and title. A nobleman is of higher status than a common man, and a noblewoman stands above a common woman, but a common man is of higher power than a noble woman because of his greater power as a male in comparison to a female, without regard to one's position by circumstances of birth.
