Banning interracial marriage would be legislating from the bench. By removing Roe v Wade they are removing legislation from the bench that it couldn't legitimately do to begin with.

The supreme court has never banned anything, beside restricting state and federal governments.

Basically the only thing that HAS to go to the SC is when they are going to override Congress, or, I guess, the states. The SC can interpret law, but a lot of that happens in the lower courts, and the SC only gets involved when they disagree. In other words, "makin' shit up" is their most significant function. A power they gave themselves, by the way.
