When did the US switch from a republic to a democracy?

[ - ] Broc_Liath 0 points 3 yearsMay 2, 2022 21:52:03 ago (+0/-0)

Pretty much immediately.

[ - ] eongoat 1 point 3 yearsMay 2, 2022 17:42:58 ago (+1/-0)

US is not a democracy, it's a constitutional republic (or you know, that's what it's supposed to be)

I guess it's been proven if you repeat a lie often enough NPCs will take the donut.

All the talking heads and politicians use the word democracy all the time. Pisses me the fuck off. Maybe that's why they do it

I know the distinction, but I still argue there's no real difference. Even if there's a bit of paper saying "the majority isn't allowed to act like a dictator," it's pretty meaningless given that they can just ignore it.

cringe at that obvious leftist voice

also all the historical criticisms on democracy are about a male only democracy. they had already learned that lesson, they even had a myth about how poseidon i think it was removed women's right to vote because women had 51% of the vote and used it to vote for athena or a goddess. either way, by plato's age, allowing women to vote was so unthinkable they would just laugh at anyone suggesting it, it wouldn't even be worth the rebuttal because no one would take such a stupid idea seriously.

How far we've fallen

Interesting. Can you link me to that one?

The myth I've heard about how they selected Athena was that she gave them the olive whereas poseidon gave them a saltwater spring. The olive tree was obviously more useful so they stuck with that.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cecrops_I

A rationalistic explanation of the fable was propounded by the eminent Roman antiquary Varro. According to him, the olive-tree suddenly appeared in Attica, and at the same time there was an eruption of water in another part of the country. So king Cecrops sent to inquire of Apollo at Delphi what these portents might signify. The oracle answered that the olive and the water were the symbols of Athena and Poseidon respectively, and that the people of Attica were free to choose which of these deities they would worship. Accordingly, the question was submitted to a general assembly of the citizens and citizenesses; for in these days women had the vote as well as men. All the men voted for the god, and all the women voted for the goddess; and as there was one more woman than there were men, the goddess appeared at the head of the poll. Chagrined at the loss of the election, Poseidon flooded the country with the water of the sea, and to appease his wrath it was decided to deprive women of the vote and to forbid children to bear their mother's names for the future.

It's a troon

The guy's a retard. We are not in charge.

[ - ] Broc_Liath 0 points 3 yearsMay 2, 2022 21:51:34 ago (+0/-0)

I'm guessing you didn't watch more than a few seconds, he repeatedly claimed the opposite.

[ - ] FalseRealityCheck 1 point 3 yearsMay 2, 2022 22:13:44 ago (+1/-0)

You're correct. I couldn't stand his voice so I quit as soon as he said we were in charge. (I'm tired of hearing how we voted for this or that when we obviously didn't.) I listened to it in it's entirety, but at 1.5X speed so his voice was tolerable. He makes some good points.

I guess the old saying is true: Never judge a fag by the sound of his voice.

As a non-american I'd interpret that accent as "californian." Nowadays I guess that might as well mean "lefty faggot" but it must really suck for the redpilled types living there.

LOL; that was actually quite funny.

Republic.

[ - ] Broc_Liath 1 point 3 yearsMay 2, 2022 21:54:26 ago (+1/-0)

That response from americans is like a catechism, or a kneejerk reaction. I see it constantly whenever someone says democracy.

Anyhow it's pretty irrelevant. Even if the US were a republic and the difference were meaningful, it still failed to prevent the oligarchs just walking in and taking over. I don't think a free society can be maintained on the scale of the US.

Sad but true.
