Most people are using web sockets now. I don't have to google this as I've used it. A "backend function"--you're either referencing a database stored procedure or a remote method probably called via REST.

I haven't even googled. There really isn't anything more to it other than that buzzword. Hopefully you do realize it's a generalized term that just describes that practice of separating out the components. If you'd programmed in the 80s and 90s you would understand why it was necessary. Presentation and logic were tightly combined.
