I'd rather say inefficient hierarchies in capitalism cause it to become a joke. A capitalist system is only as good as the collective ideal of the participants in it. To me, our main problem was filling the hierarchies with women initially, and then because of the house-playing, a continued stream of 'persons of color'.

Keep Jews and women out of these spaces, and capital markets seem to do pretty well. I'm sympathetic to the urge to blame these things on capitalism, per se, but I think it's the wrong attribution. Capitalism is as good as its parts. It kicks out what you put in, based on how you set the rules of the game. You need moral game designers.

(A caveat: I don't mean prohibit women from working strictly. There will always be some women who break the mold, and who do really well in these environments, especially in particular compartments of business. The problem is the massive women's liberation movement that instills in women a social norm that is pro-career. Without that insidious influence, together with the economic effects that drove down pay, women wouldn't have equated all of these things with their personal power. The less common type of woman who we might say actually suits life in a competitive hierarchy need not be excluded, but neither does she need to be held up as the ideal for all women to pursue.)

My favorite part is that the people who couldn't change a tire look down on people in the trades... This can't happen soon enough.
