Looking to get a new edc pocket knife. Thoughts?

submitted by PeckerwoodPerry to whatever 3 yearsApr 25, 2022 15:23:03 ago (+11/-0)     (whatever)

I currently use a Kershaw, assisted opening, 3.5 inch blade, with a deep pocket carry clip. I want to give that one to my wife and upgrade. Prefer American made. What do you guys use?

Aren't those made in Tiawan?

I think some of their knives are made in Japan and Taiwan. The models I posted are American made.

That explains the price. Have you used them? Carried them daily?

I own a paramilitary 2. It’s a 3.5 inch, robust blade and made with great lightweight quality. The locking/unlocking system is my favorite and can be quite addicting when fidgeting. I use mine sparingly (at work) because I opt for disposable box cutters in favor of a quality pocket knife. I need a blade for cutting open bags of various oils and corrosive materials.

I mostly use mine for summertime hiking/camping or the occasional package opening.

How much are you willing to spend? Do you like sharpening? Do you abuse knives? What are you mainly using it for? Do you want the same features as the kershaw? Why American made? Does it need to be a folder?

edit: I carry a cold steel Ti-Lite, btw. Don't like it as much as my other knives, but if it falls out while riding the motorcycle I won't give a shit. https://www.bladehq.com/item--Cold-Steel-4-TiLite-w--648

This is my favorite folder: https://www.bladehq.com/item--Spyderco-Caly-3-Carbon--3174

Assisted opening is cool, but I can go either way

I have a spyderco similar to that one. It has by far the best edge of any of my knives on it at the moment; spyderco steel seems to sharpen up really nicely... but it also seems to go dull just as easily. Must be especially soft or something. It' my backup now, and I really like it just not as much as my benchmade.

I have never had to sharpen the particular blade I posted. It is made like a samurai sword: hard steel sandwhiched by softer steel.

I don't abuse my blades (unless it's a beater knife) and will only occasionally strop it on my jeans. Had the knife for over 10 years.

Benchmade (Blue) knives are generally always worth their price. I had a 940 and loved it, but I lost it. I prefer the leaf blade shape of the spyderco though.

Better carbon steel can get sharper than stainless but will also dull faster.

Makes sense.

A dovo high carbon straight razor would be the extreme end of the spectrum. For practical use in a pocket knife, it is less valuable because of the higher upkeep and the knife will rust easier.

I'm a ZT fan, I've a similar model to the modern link, as well as some older fixed-blade designs. The weight is hefty, which feels very positive in your hands. The handle and grip are superb, meant for large White men, not women and others.

After holding my first ZT knife (the fixed blade) I fell in love with the handle shape and design for comfort, positive grip, and function.

I had a ZT folder back when they first came out. It was a badass knife. Heavy, but very useful

Buck 110 folder. One of the best selling skinning knives of all time.

Literally can't go wrong with a Buck 110 folder.

Never was a skinner just a clip point folder.

Watched my dad skin animals only ever with a 110 with a busted tip. Would even use it to break through the crotch bone when he forgot the hatchet.

I like Emerson opening knives, faster than a switchblade, two options depending on price points:

Spyderco

I have a couple of those Kershaws. Nice knives.

But for some retarded reason, I ALWAYS manage to stab myself in the leg with their assist opening it up a bit in my pocket for some spastic reason.

Out of the dozen or so pretty nice ones I've bought to try and have laying around here, these guys are my favorite. I just like the feel in my hand, how easy to open and close single handedly, the ease of sharpening.

Benchmade is all I carry.

I have a Camillius with VG-10 steel. It was fairly inexpensive but I like it. It's slightly harder to sharpen but stays sharp better than other knives I've owned. Before this, I've only owned regular stainless steel knives and I think this one is a little better than all those. I think it came with a little pocket clip but I always take those off because it just traps dirt and gets hung up in my pocket.

I'm carrying a Benchmade mini grip rn, it's a solid knife. I rotate between a few, but off the top of my head, the only nice American knives I own are Benchmade.

I've always had Benchmade, Kershaw (when they were made in the USA), and recently Spyderco but lately I got a Boker I'm really happy with.
