I have no religion.

Religion is for people who can't grasp the teachings of a particular spiritual master. Because of this, evil ones rise up and declare: "I know The Way; here is what you must do." The evil ones then distort the message and codify it into 'sacred texts'. Meanwhile, those unable to see through this bullshit remain enslaved. (And you are a slave until YOU set yourself free.)

Here's something to contemplate: If you were left on a deserted island, in the middle of some ocean, without ever having been exposed to any religion, you should still have the ability to discern truth from lies, and good from evil. Granted, it would me much more difficult than having some material to work with, but you would be better off with nothing than working with evil materials.

Following somebody else's made up rules is not going to lead you to the Truth regardless of how many other people also follow said rules. Nor is coming to a site like this and proselytizing for somebody's rules—especially if those rules command you to do so. (That should be a big red warning flag.)

But if you must have something to use, I recommend the Tao Te Ching (pronounced Dow Deh Jing), which most simply means The Way. The translation I have read repeatedly over the last several decades is by Stephen Mitchell. Each time I reread this simple little book it is like I encountered it for the first time.

Here is a but a taste which you could easily spend the rest of your days trying to understand:

Tao Te Ching – Verse 1

The tao that can be told is not the eternal Tao.
The name that can be named is not the eternal Name.

The unnamable is the eternally real.
Naming is the origin of all particular things.

Free from desire, you realize the mystery.
Caught in desire, you see only the manifestations.

Yet mystery and manifestations arise from the same source.
This source is called darkness.

Darkness within darkness.
The gateway to all understanding.
