Also, it's arguably worse to be adjudicated insane because instead of a "normal" sentence, you can be sentenced to lockup in an asylum indefinitely, and that's on a per-charge basis.

So say you break into someone's house, kill them and take their stuff. That's a minimum of three charges: burglary, murder, robbery.

You can get found guilty of the robbery, but not guilty by reason of insanity for the other two. So you get sentenced for the robbery -- say, five years. But instead of doing those five years right away, you get sent to the asylum indefinitely until they say you've been "cured," and then you begin to serve the five year sentence.
