I just remembered that Catcher in the Rye features Holden praising amazing niggers while putting down whites. In fact he does it twice, focusing on musicians. Wow Kerouac did that to the white musician too. Both in the postwar 1940s.

Holden was a smart kid that pointed out how fake and bullshit adult society was. He's an asshole and he has his flaws, but mostly it pointed out how adults don't know what the fuck they're doing and everything is shit.

It was written as a way for Salinger to work through his PTSD after D Day.

Check out Godfather. A lot of loyalty, brotherhood and family in that. There's some crime but it's mostly about honor and looking after those close to you.
