the comet is hurtling toward the inner solar system. But it will not get any closer than 1 billion miles from the sun by 2031, which is "slightly farther than the distance of the planet Saturn

So literally not going anywhere near the inner solar system, then. Kill the author for lying.

"This comet is literally the tip of the iceberg for many thousands of comets that are too faint to see in the more distant parts of the solar system," David Jewitt

"JEWITT"

The comet won't even be close for another 10 years at least, unless I fucked up the math.

2,000,000,000 miles at 22,000 mph = 90,909.09 hours to destination.
91,000 hours / 24 hours a day = 3,791.6666 days
3792 days / 365 days in a year = 10.389 years

Nearly 10.4 years right?

Even then it'll be from here to Saturn away from us, not to mention what kind of impact Jupiter and Saturn will have on said comet gravitationally. We won't even notice it unless it has a huge tail, but even then it'll be interesting to watch.

"... David Jewitt, a professor of planetary science and astronomy at the University of California, Los Angeles, said in a statement to NASA."

Finishing the quoting sentence, we see he sent this profound statement to NASA, haha. Hey NASA, be aware that there are more comets out there! Perhaps we should name the originating location the Kuiper Belt or maybe the Oort Cloud?

“Literally the tip of the iceberg…”
Nope. No tips of any icebergs. That’s not what literally means.

I quoted the article that was quoting the “scientist”

Sorry, I was referring to the article, not you.

I was half asleep when I saw this anyway and misunderstood you. My fault

Yeah, they don’t even melt when they’re out that far. It’s about as non-story a story as can be. The only thing to bring up is that it’s apparently a new visitor whose apoapsis takes it all the way to the inner Oort Cloud, which is at least interesting.

Only a concern if you worry that Saturn will collide with us one day, the comet is going to be millions of miles away.

Better bring out your telescope

There will be other comets.

I pray it strikes the Earth, to end our faggotry.

Knowledge of this very important celestial event wouldn’t have been possible without the Webb space telescope

We must all worship the Webb space telescope

[ - ] Stonkmar 0 points 2 yearsApr 19, 2022 10:48:17 ago (+0/-0)

Twilight Zone episode in the making (if not already). Webb crashes on planet, inhabitants worship god from sky, profit?
