Maybe it was my headphones but it felt like there was way more mid range boost than I usually hear in a metal band.

Good call. I read the guitarist tunes only tunes down a half step from standard tuning and uses an eq pedal to boost the mid range.

The most morbid tale I can personally think of his when I ate Chipotle and PF Changs all on the same night and couldn't crap for over 3 months.

When I did, though....woooah boy, it was huge!
