Thank you. Rabbi Glazer, who I am quite familiar with, is notorious for these salacious little anecdotes that he inserts into lectures in this sideways manner. He is a Kabbalist and Hassidim of the Chabad school. He was an American surfer kid from the 1970s who decided to pursue scholarship. I'm sorry, but I trust his historical sense and objectivity in this matter about as far as I could throw him.

I just wish people here could apply some critical thinking. Consider the allegation, and the weight of history that he is challenging. The consensus of scholarship in this area is that the first pope of direct Jewish ancestry (aside from Peter, quite obviously) was not until the middle ages, the 11th century to be more exact. There is an entire establishment of scholarship behind Church history. But one guy can overturn that because he's got a cool, secret story, without citation, from God knows where. Yep, sounds legitimate.

Glazer can just rattle off this story (providing no name, and zero evidence), and every anti-Christian here is basically like: "Yeah, trust the rabbi." Trust the kabbalist when he says a kabbalist uses kabbalah to start a fraudulent church that would live for 2,000 years. Talk about a Golem story!

Has anyone even considered the implications of the claim?

1. If you believe the rabbi, then you are calling yourself a kabbalah-believer, because the story is that the rabbi used Jewish ritual magic to gain powers that impressed the early Christians. Yes, he used magic to become Pope.

2. Do you have any concept of what it would require to start a tradition, on the fly, as historically significant as Catholicism was? People would DIE for this ability. Think of how much people struggle today, even with modern media and technology, to start something that people get behind in droves. But this rabbi used some magic of the divine names and just got all early Jesus-worshippers to up and go to Rome!

Forget that Rome was an enemy! Forget the red/blood martyrs! The hundreds who went to die willingly, being killed by wild animals for people's entertainment or burned alive. These were all people duped by a magical rabbi! Hahaha.

Praise Christ. Happy Easter.

Who was he supposed to be talking about? Peter?
The Kabbala wasn’t written for another 1000 years.

[ - ] CHIRO 0 points 2 yearsApr 17, 2022 21:10:46 ago (+0/-0)

Yes, he seemed to be trying to say that Peter was not the first pope. There is already a bit of controversy (not whatsoever controversial from the standpoint of a Catholic) as to whether Peter was ever in Rome at all - some people say it was later Church legend. The rabbi may be capitalizing on some of that hoopla.

Of course, he didn't name the supposed rabbi.

I'm gonna be a bit nitpicky here. It's Easter. You love me a little bit. Kabbalah refers to a particular metaphysical tradition in Judaism: it is not a book. The main books on which it is based are Sefer Yetzirah, Sefer Bahir and Sefer Ha-Zohar (or just The Zohar). There are many other important books as well, but these are the big guns.

Sefer Yetzirah is often called the 'first' Kabbalistic work, and they estimate it around 7th-8th century A.D. The truth is there was no 'first' work of Kabbalah. It's a continuation of a tradition in Jewish magic that really took off after the 2nd Temple period ended; although even that has its roots in Jewish magic that was prevalent well before the time of Christ.

This is a huge problem in the modern perception of Jewry, especially by many Christians (specifically evangelicals in the west). Kabbalah is as much a canonical part of Judaism (orthodox and reform) as Torah. They don't consider it separate from Torah. You could argue from Sefer Yetzirah in front of any court of rabbis today and nobody would think twice. People think the 'revelation' ended with Torah (for the Jews), or at least with Babylonian Talmud. Not so. Rabbinic Judaism has been 'updating' its canon for two millennia.

Glazer would be anachronistic if he said this so-called Jewish pope was a Kabbalist. There was no Kabbalistic tradition at the time. He'd really be suggesting that the rabbi was involved with Jewish magic, probably some kind of talismanic magic involving the divine names. This sort of stuff preceded Kabbalah, but it's part of the whole evolution that lead to it.

You really know your stuff. I mean, the guy is so obviously full of shit. I guess that’s right up their alley though. Christian miracles are really made by jews with magic god words. I was wondering why they decided to give up idols. What do you think provoked that?

Unrelated: Are you aware that the month of the year with the highest number of suicide attempts and the highest number of hospitalizations for psychiatric crises is April? I think it has something to do with the rapid increase in sunlight. Lately the whole forum has been inundated by trolls and even fairly moderate users are acting kinda nuts. Well I just had a theory about it. What do you think? Coincidence? Or has everyone gone a little manic?

[ - ] CHIRO 0 points 2 yearsApr 17, 2022 22:50:19 ago (+0/-0)

"I was wondering why they decided to give up idols."

How do you mean?

"Are you aware that the month of the year with the highest number of suicide attempts and the highest number of hospitalizations for psychiatric crises is April?"

I had not a clue. That's really interesting though. I find it odd based only on my experience. As someone very sensitive to decreasing sunlight and prone to depression in the winter months, this time of year is like a breath of fresh air. I feel better at this time of year than at any other. Incidentally, I love this time of year as much as autumn. The two best times of year are mid April through mid June, and mid September through mid November.

As far as the behavior at the forum recently, your guess is as good as mine. I really don't know. We could speculate about a few things. First, there's the bad element. In terms of their increase in shenanigans, it may be something site-structural, or something having to do with the way the site is being administrated or modded. I couldn't say specifically. With respect to the better element possibly acting a little 'manic', I believe there is something afoot in the 'psychological air'. Clown world seems to be mounting, and as this Russia-Ukraine narrative, combined with the Great Reset, is unfolding, I think things seem less intelligible than they have at any point thus far. There is a sense of chaos. This may be a symptom of the fact that people, even sensible ones, are losing the 'beat': and this isn't to blame anybody. I am too.

I think there may be a burgeoning awareness that our 'da Jews' narrative is just not adequate. That narrative has made sense of things for people here for years now. With the actual chaos afoot, and combining this with a worldview that is becoming less effective at making things intelligible, we might be inching closer to an explanation for the odd behavior lately (perhaps). Or, the effect has been to push out the more sensible people, leaving a worse element in their wake. That shift might better account for things at the site, together with the vulnerabilities that would create as far as making the site better fodder for trolls.

Exodus:
“Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness [of any thing] that [is] in heaven above, or that [is] in the earth beneath, or that [is] in the water under earth: 5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God [am] a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth [generation] of them that hate me; 6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.”
Deuteronomy 4:13
“You saw no form of any kind the day the Lord spoke to you at Horeb out of the fire. Therefore watch yourselves very carefully, 16 so that you do not become corrupt and make for yourselves an idol, an image of any shape, whether formed like a man or a woman, 17 or like any animal on earth or any bird that flies in the air, 18 or like any creature that moves along the ground or any fish in the waters below. 19”
There are other passages forbiding idolatry.
At that time, people in the ME worshipped their various gods through idols, which they protected and cared for, and prostrated themselves to. Abraham’s father is said to be a priest and idol maker in Ur or wherever they came from.

So I guess I was wondering why moses and other priests begin to push a ban on idolatry. Perhaps you feel the answer is “because god told them to” but I prefer to look for political reasons

I believe there is something afoot in the 'psychological air

Ive been feeling that too but it occured to me it might be the season. I feel much better right now too because I really hate winter and the lack of light. Melatonin and the melanocortin system have seasonal variations which hypothetically could be over-stimulating some people who are on the exciteable end of the spectrum. I would think the trolls would be the ones suffering the most from this. For instance this “anal” person is obviously someone who has spent time among goats. He even engages in some borderline normal interactions at times. But this week he created at least 4 alts that I know of. I think some of these dudes are verging on manic and things will settle down in a month.

I agree there is a longer term trend toward shittier people at the expense of more thoughtful individuals. It continues to be a problem. I was pleasantly surprised by Yargi’s defense of me though the other day. Nice comment you made on dingbat’s post btw. You could have been a therapist, and I mean that in a good way. ;)

:) If they got paid decently, I would consider it. Clinical psychology is off the table at this point: competition is high and I have too great a discontinuity in my educational pathway to be competitive. Everyone and their grandmother is going for such professions, so naturally people have discovered the 'perfect CV'. I'd have to do some further undergrad, and my age is prohibitive at this point (in my mind, anyway).

Counseling is an option, but this is what I'm referring to when I say 'dogshit pay'. It's still a masters-lvl profession, with starting salaries in the high 30s to low 40s. Financially it's just a nightmare. There is the potential to start a business, at which point things could be lucrative, but again, to start down that road in my early 30s seems daunting, especially since I would be in my 40s by the time I was able to possibly earn something substantial.

Anyway, regarding the idolatry. I think the answer would be that Jews are strongly monist. They borrowed heavily from Neoplatonic thought, which is also strictly monist. This means there is One true being. The prohibition against idols is certainly a theocratic kind of force to discourage religious error. Now, what becomes confusing is that this doesn't mean there is not power in the procedures that involve idols. Even strictly monist Jews can do theurgical magic, but there is a complicated metaphysics that has to be understood: basically, even idols are not representations of something separate from God, rather they represent 'principles' of emanation from The One.

But the subject matter is erudite, and takes years of education, making the possibility for heretical error massive for the laity. For this reason, and because of certain controversies in the Jewish world pertaining to Kabbalah, Kabbalah became something tightly guarded. One had to master certain things scholarly and reach the age of 40 before the secrets would be revealed to him.

So I would agree there is a huge political element to the prohibition of idol worship. It betrays a similar pressure in any religious tradition that possesses esoteric elements - this is true of Catholicism too. The priest class always protects the flock from aspects of the tradition which are not directly salvific, and which are 'touchy'. The liturgy of the church makes all 'crucial' parts of the religion available to the laity (such as saving sacraments), but esoteria is reserved for an initiated group that necessarily dedicates themselves to and adopts a certain religious vocation/life.

Another way to consider the political element - absent any religious contents - is to just think of things philosophically. Imagine you share a worldview with some society, and you are one of a few scholars in the society. There are some questions you've answered, and those answers form the beliefs that make up your society's worldview. But there are 'touchy spots': things that haven't been worked out yet, and the fluidity of which represents a possible vulnerability to the worldview as a whole. Depending on the forthcoming answers to such questions, you could threaten your whole group's identity. So you protect the bigger part of the flock from that activity and you give to them what's concrete, the sure answers, the ones that form the main part of culture. Only initiated people who are sophisticated enough to navigate the 'gray areas' are made aware of the gray areas.

In terms of the 'idols' in Kabbalah, again, it is not understood that there are many gods, but that within God there are principles of emanation. In psychological terms, you might call these 'personas' or 'attributes' of God. In metaphysical terms, you'd call them hypostases. Interestingly, this thought comes from Greek and from Christianity (the Trinity is understood as a trinitarian hypostases). Pagan Platonists believed in a trinity without calling it a trinity.

The distinction in Kabbalah is Pythagorean. Rather than 3 hypostases distinctly, Kabbalists believe in 10 divine emanations (the Sephira). But once you get into it, they also have a 'supernal trinity', the highest and more sublime of the ten.

Kabbalah shouldn't be dismissed. It's tightly related to Greek metaphysics, to Catholicism, and the dialectic taking place between Christianity and Kabbalah through the ages is super interesting.

Lastly, the 'anal' guy is also confusing to me. It almost feels like a reaction against something or someone. I've noticed his near-normal interactions, and also the inanity. The activity just seems like someone with a chip on his shoulder against the site, happenings at the site, or particular people.

How fucked up jews are. Everybody knows Jesus was jewish and hated the fucking rabbis and what they did to the jews that he preached at the jews to convert them.

He told them to rise above the scribes and pharisees; the fucking rabbis.

Spot the jew happens when they say God is violent, because only the jewish god in the old testament is violent. The Christian God is not. Jesus was fed up with the violent jews in Israel.

You expect the milquetoast 20th century American version from that idiot marxist preacher Reinhold Niebuhr that flooded the mainstream churches and turned people off.

You want the 1599 Geneva Bible that created the Puritans.

[ - ] didyouknow 0 points 2 yearsApr 17, 2022 04:47:25 ago (+2/-2)

Jesus, if he even existed, was an insurrectionist, the evidence for that is overwhelming so it would make sense for him to be against the Scribes and Pharisees for the same reason the Zealots were, because they were compromising with the 'goy' I.E the Romans. He wasn't against them for any noble reasons or because he was against the jews, the only one who makes that claim are jew-wise individuals who still can't let go of Christianity despite it being jewish to the core.

[ - ] yesiknow 0 points 2 yearsApr 17, 2022 18:52:47 ago (+0/-0)

What in Jesus' preaching is jewish?

[ - ] didyouknow 0 points 2 yearsApr 19, 2022 13:46:30 ago (+0/-0)*

How about everything seeing how his teachings is based out of the old testament. How about the verse of Jesus calling for family members to turn each other? That's pretty jewish if you ask me. What about that one time where Jesus called a gentile woman a dog. Yep, that's pretty jewish too. Having Simon the Zealot as an apostle? Zealots were jewish fanatics who engaged in terrorist activities against the Romans because they wanted them out of Judea. What was Jesus doing with someone like that? Specially considering that Jesus never turned Simon away from the Zealots as Simon was still called Simon the Zealot even after Jesus's death.

[ - ] yesiknow 0 points 2 yearsApr 19, 2022 19:01:20 ago (+0/-0)

you're a simple minded literalist. Jesus taught up and used metaphor a lot. He also said Christianity wasn't for everyone and some souls are simply erased. As for zealots and terrorists, you have the 20th century view that Christians are milquetoasts and want to be all things to all people. They're nobody's psychiatrist either.

He wrote several books, and many more were written about him. You should read them if you want to know.

One thing he wasn't is a kabbalist, or even a "jew" in the modern sense. Other than the "lost tribes" all jews in the ME were killed by Nebuchadnezzar II.

Who was Colonel Sanders, creator of KFC?

Answer: a man named Harland Sanders who created KFC.

Oh, but everything in early Christian history was a secret, a Jewish secret!

The Jews have no natural enemy, because even their enemies were Jews. They are the man behind every curtain of Oz. Everybody was just a secret Jew!
