Travelling actor troupes were known to be a thoroughly disreputable lot. They didn’t let women on the stage because actors were so degenerate that it would have been the equivalent of being a whore.

Going in to acting was something that good christians simply did not do. Even in my mother’s generation. Im sure she knew if she ever thought of going in to acting, her parents would never speak to her again.

Hollywood movies normalized degeneracy over the last 80 or 90 years. Regular working people were not constantly exposed to people like Liz Taylor before the movies. Only rich urbanites and aristocrats patronized the theater.

And remember, there were alot of plays that were banned because of shitty degeneracy. Books like Mansfield Park give a sense of the prevailing attitudes toward the theater as a source of degeneracy. Conservative religious types never went to plays at all. Performing in plays is probably banned by the amish.

People have always had a tendency to be idol worshipers. It used to be religious figures and then politicians. Now it's "celebrities" of all sorts who don't actually have the power (or perceived power) to change peoples lives. It's one thing to worship something you believe can change your life (like a god or politician), but to worship something that can't actually do anything for you is a sign of immaturity...or retardation.
