I don't know much about drumming, but I know that a lot of people say that Portnoy from Dream Theater is the best.

I do like it, but if you'll excuse me I'm gonna fucking nerd out a little bit. I think think metalcore and hardcore are too heavy on the kick and the crash. Also, there's the question of precision control. I really enjoy someone that can play loud, but with drums precision comes from not only being accurate in where you hit but also how you hit. I don't know those drummers, and I won't talk shit. Real mastery is attained when you can be super fast and also control the volume, which is something I don't see with that genre of drummers.

I do like that music. I probably just don't have enough exposure to it to really understand the technical aspects of it. Jazz, Bluegrass, Blues, and traditional folk music has been my bread and butter.
I should listen to more, have any suggestions?

Hey @PeckerwoodPerry I am not sure if you have listened to this ever, but this is the perfect mix of jazz and metal. Gar was a very underrated drummer, he came from playing jazz, along with Chris Poland (which is who inspired me to ever even pick up a guitar). This whole album, in my opinion is one of the best metal albums ever written.I dont know much about this newer stuff, it seems like just speed, but lacks any musical soul. They all seem cookie cutter and completely forgettable. Again, just my opinion. Im not knocking anybody's tastes, we like what we like. Anyway, here enjoy

People often consume music for emotional quality over technical quality. ~Metal genres are often trying to convey very angry/assertive tone so loud/brash/jarring is intended. That doesn't mean it can't also get technical, though.

On that note, Darkside from Mgła is pretty insane. He used to play the xylophone growing up. Cymbal master. Black metal uses a lot of double kick, but this guy plays very clean without using triggers.

The good thing about Mgła is that they are very popular as far as BM goes. They don’t really advertise their NS views, but they’re lyrics are usually more black pilled views of existence with tinges of history in the mix. I would assume they’re gonna be making a run to the states this fall.

I love pessimistic philosophical undertones in lyrics. I’m also a sucker for emotional ambiance in music; hence most of the bands I like. I heard some of the NS BM bands out of _i think_ Germany, but I was a fan of that thrash metal sound. I liked the (fashwave) pictures they had playing in the background though.

I actually prefer thrash, or crossover thrash but once I got jpilled I couldn’t listen to the bands I loved (Municipal Waste/Power Trip/Iron Regan). I was disgusted. I went back to the old standards like Voivod and Megadeth. Any suggestions are gratefully welcomed!
