Board game recommendations?

submitted by Mikehaggar1776 to WhatCouldGoWrong 3 yearsApr 1, 2022 22:53:44 ago (+11/-0)     (WhatCouldGoWrong)

The wife has recently shown an interest in sitting down for a board game
.. we played Catan a long time ago she really liked it. Wondering if anyone has a recommendation.

Your wife might like this.

Ok this was enough for me to stop lurking and make an account.

I played that Secret Hitler game with a bunch of lefties once and I was giddy with the absolute comedy of it. If they only knew

Backgammon.

Quick games and high repeatability, backgammon is fantastic. Complex strategies for a very simple game.

She’ll like Carcassonne.

You’re welcome

My wife stopped playing because I win all the time... There is one card game that she beats me in and that is all we are allowed to play anymore..

Risk is a good classic.

2 player games: Jaipur, Everdell, Dominion (also great with 3 or 4 players), 7 Wonders Duel, Viticulture. I could recommend about 20 games, but it's hard without knowing what either of you like.

Take a look at boardgamegeek.com. It is full of faggots on the forumas, but the top game ratings are pretty spot on and it lets you break things down by game type (worker placement, drafting, etc.).

Scythe, This is an amazingly well crafted game. You can play it 100 times, and try a different strategy each time. I cannot recommend it more.

If she has any interest in history, Memoir '44 is a nice two person card based small unit tactics game that last about 20-30 minutes. If she's more of a lol, that's fun, try King of Tokyo dice game.

Scythe is too boom boom for women.

[ - ] cyclops1771 0 points 3 yearsApr 2, 2022 11:43:35 ago (+0/-0)

BOOM BOOM? What do you mean? As in fighting/battle/war? Last 3 times I 've played it, there has no cwar. it costs too much to actually do it compared to the benefit.

I came in to recommend this.

My nephew grew from sitting on my lap grabbing stuff off the board to being constantly called out by his dad for cheating. Despite that, he and I were always willing to play when I was around.

[ - ] Lordbananafist 2 points 3 yearsApr 1, 2022 23:15:35 ago (+2/-0)

I thought it would be awful.

It was not.

And you can do like 3 games in an evening. So it’s long enough for tension, but not stupid long.

[ - ] pickingrinninspittin 0 points 3 yearsApr 2, 2022 10:25:21 ago (+0/-0)

Also came here to say this.

Easy to understand. Can be surprisingly subtle. Games are relatively short. Always a crowd pleaser.

Another game we love is called Quirkle. Again the games are long enough to be engaging and competitive but not so long that it feels like a slog.

IMO those are too nerdy.

For example, I'd prefer Betrayal at House on the Hill instead of Arkham Horror. Both are the famous horror themed boardgames, and both play well. But Betrayal is easier to pick up and do well as a semi-invested woman instead of someone trying to maximize game systems. It also has a better narrative for casuals as well as a fun party aspect.

I like Dead of Winter and Dominion.

I like boggle, hearts, scum, and bullshit. And chess.

Quelf is hilarious, better with 4+ people.

Farkle is a simple dice game good for teaching math to children and fun for the whole fam.

And if you want to become demon possessed, Cards Against Humanity.

[ - ] ruck_feddit 1 point 3 yearsApr 2, 2022 00:05:22 ago (+1/-0)

Farkle is great for a couple/handful of people to play while drinking and cooking out. 654 for once you've had too much to drink.

CAH is a lot of fun if half the people there are normie prudes.

There are only a few games I consider worthy of my time.
Chess
Checkers
Backgammon
Stratego
Risk
Playing cards are the most versatile and a pack of cards in the bug out bag is👍🏻👍🏻.

Came to recommend Carcassonne and Catan. Already listed. Uh, the expansions for Catan can shake it up pretty nicely. Start with Seafarers, as it expands the board without drastically changing the core mechanics like some of the others.

Mexican Train is a good domino-based game.

Code Names is a good 4-player tile-based game that's kind of like a cross between Apples to Apples and Guess Who. I like it because it's only limited by your own creativity, vocabulary, and insight to how your partner's mind works; the game itself can never inherently go stale.

[ - ] beece 0 points 3 yearsApr 2, 2022 07:05:27 ago (+0/-0)

My wife doesn't play board games. Then we went over to my brother and SILs place and played a domino based game called "Mexican Train". Now we have "Mexican Train" games in both houses.

I like a bunch of things that she doesn't. UNO, Risk, Monopoly, Chess, etc none of which she has any interest in.... so take that for what it is.

When (and if) you get fed up with simpler stuff, look up High Frontier and other Phil Eklund games, they’re incredible in multiple ways

[ - ] Bornoffireandice 0 points 3 yearsApr 2, 2022 03:52:36 ago (+0/-0)

Pandemic is probably the easiest to get into game that I can recommend. Otherwise I suggest Arkham Horror.

[ - ] Hall_of_Cost 0 points 3 yearsApr 2, 2022 03:33:10 ago (+0/-0)

Takenoko is really fun with just two players but supports more. I also like Patchwork, it's a good two players only game. There are a few versions, as far as I know, there is no difference other than art on the multiple versions of Patchwork.

key to the kingdom is a good one

I love bluffing games, so Avalon and Secret Hitler are two of my favorites (despite not considering myself the "Voat norm" vis-a-vi the Fuhrer). Other suggestions:

Quick Pick-up:
2 Player: Onitama
3+: Splendor
4: Blockus
3-8: Tsuaro

Medium:
2: Patchwork
2+: Dominion (deck building game, where you make the deck AS YOU PLAY, not like Pokemon or Magic where you collect)
3+: Munchkins
3+: Lords of Waterdeep (one of my favorites)

Hard I'd save until you're a little more experienced.

Co-op: Pandemic (my wife's favorite, long predates Covid)

[ - ] KeepPoal4fags 0 points 3 yearsApr 2, 2022 16:10:22 ago (+0/-0)

Ever try "liars dice"? High pace bluffing and it's incredibly fun for 3+ players. No real limit to how many can play at a time.

Parcheesi or its sister "Sorry" is mindless fun.

Viticulture. You can roleplay to drink wine irl when making wine in that game. Basically the game revolves around families making wine.
