I read an article about how there's a whole new language based on english growing in Hong Kong and Taiwan. The teachers mostly don't understand things like tenses and articles so they just teach students to directly translate cantonese into english.

Did this degrade the character of honest rice farmers over time? Is this what happened to the romans? Or were they already like that.

The japs had an influx of ancient Siberian(White) people who integrated within their culture. You can see it in the modern populace in those who have half-jap/half-White facial structure and in the men who can grow facial hair. It could be something like the way one group arranged marriages vs the other. Arranged marriage cultures would tend to have greater emphasis on cash and less on personality traits, I should think.
I feel I dont have enough insight in to those cultures to make a good guess. I have a much better sense of the differences among white subtypes. Maybe Ill have a better sense of chinks when they are officially running the country in a few years.

Could be something to do with land availability too. I remember my grandfather suggesting that the reason the west mechanised so hard is because we hit the atlantic and couldn't just keep expanding to solve wealth and population problems. In the case of Japan they colonised all arable land very quickly, with the exception of Hokkaido, and had to become extremely socially efficient in order to compete. Maybe the corrupt and inefficient japanese daimyo just got wiped out.
By contrast in China there's no shortage of space, and whenever it looked like they were going to hit a malthusian wall there'd be an invasion or a rebellion, millions of people would die and they'd have plenty of free land again.
Another possibility is that the japs/koreans spent longer in an arctic environment and so they had to evolve greater social cohesion, whereas the hans split off and colonised bountiful warm climates earlier which are a lot more forgiving.

I can imagine that an electronic system might fail, and then the users would disable it to get the lift back in operation. But what is the back story to the video? Surely a clunky mechanical system made with 1850's technology is as easy to repair as it is to disable, so why take any kind of risk?

Elevators are operated by cables but electrics hold the brakes off. If power fails, then the brakes auto engage to keep the lift where it is.
