I often wonder what the US would look like if every president took the same stance as George Washington.

Washington felt the presidency was a figurehead for government, to meet with foreign dignitaries and to discuss thoughts for treaties, and the only role for legislation was to confirm whether any legislation congress passed was constitutional or not.

At some point, the president decided to take on the role of lawgiver and helmsman of the US, and plot the course.

It's as if everyone believes the president is now the one in charge, rather than congress and the people.
