Windows XP is not so great anymore. Only three browsers work on it, none of which will play bitchute vids at all, and Youtube videos periodically start and stop. Win 7 is now the best bet, after which MX Linux is the last stop.
I know this is old, but also both of those no longer receive updates. They also have many bugs and exploits that are still unpatched. They won’t be updated until something like wannacry hits it again
Yeah, i know. I gave up on servicing peoples comps after win 10 came out. I had very little hope that people would migrate to linux due to win 10 being a complete crap, but even that died out in a month or so after everybody was like "yeah win 10, good". I mean, jesus fucking christ... I lost hope completely that normies will ever be tech literate. Come to think of it, it's completely logical that everyone accepted the jab as a way of life. Just follow orders. At least win 7 had little automatic circumventions around user input. Win 10 just went completely bonkers with it. Just sit and wait and hope for the best. And don't ever change anything in registry, it's nullified the next update. Eh, i member the days i studied windows internals through and through so that i could service comps faster and easier. Nope, fuck them. It's not even my specialty.
TIL people install special software just to take screenshots...
SnagIt does much, much more than take screenshots. I've been using it for about 15 years or more. Back when I started using it no other software could even come close to the capabilities of SnagIt. Other applications have gotten much better, but I stick with SnagIt because I know it and the developers have been continuously adding new features.
OBS works just fine on 7 and is free.
So are the .torrent versions of SnagIt.
Addendum: Thanks for the tip about OBS. I had never heard of it before. I will check it out.

Good luck then.
Big win10 updates (or missing lots of the incremental ones) essentially becomes a byte by byte "copy/paste" for every element. Download the update, unpack the update, find one byte of the update, find the appropriate byte in the installed version, compare, write the proper byte in a new location, move to the next byte.
For all significant updates - such as being behind more than 6 months - it is much much faster to burn an iso and start from a clean install.
Save data before hand by booting into a live linux environment and copying all necessary files.
Well, there's your problem. I mean, yeah, Microsoft has a shitty inefficient update process, but life is a race between lazy programming and faster hardware.
I had given up on finding a cracked version for 2021 until I read your post. I made a couple of mistakes getting the cracks to work, but eventually figured it out and it worked like a charm. I was even able to give the jews back their money through e-file for both federal and state.
Blows my mind when people use cracked software that's illegaly distributed and super shady, to enter all of their personal and financial information into. It's the perfect honeypot.
Next time you might want to consider the possibility that there are people in the world who are actually smarter and more experienced than you. Once you accept that fact you open yourself up to higher knowledge.
I don't know how the pajeets and blue hairs manage to keep the thing going at all. The miasma of code is a ticking time bomb. The most competent code in the system is probably the backdoors the NSA sneaks in.
That's because you're running a piss old version. How old? So old that's it's not called "LTSB" anymore. It's LTSC. Get an image of it, the key will work the same.
This is even LTSB, which should have fewer updates.
Not by design. It has no feature updates. No forced updates. If you don't keep up to date on the updates, it's still gonna piss you off with install time. This one is not windows' fault but the owners'.
I don't understand why people use setups like this when HTPCs are a thing. You can use the HTPC as a NAS too. Much easier than using something like kodi and none of the stupid codec restrictions that come with trying to play files with a smart tv.
[ - ] GhostCow 1 point 2.2 yearsMar 18, 2022 20:15:42 ago (+1/-0)
My experience with smart tvs is that it's a total crapshoot what will play regardless. I have some work friends that have brand new smart tvs and half the time I give them a flash drive with some shows for them to watch, their tvs won't play it. Almost everything I give them is either h.264 or h.265 so I have no idea why some stuff plays and some stuff doesn't.
That's why I just have a htpc hooked up to my living room tv and play everything that way. It doubles as a NAS so I can just download shit on the gaming PC in my bedroom and then move it over. It's a pretty great setup.
[ - ] GhostCow 1 point 2.1 yearsMar 24, 2022 17:41:09 ago (+1/-0)
It's just a standard Windows 10 PC with the k-lite codec pack and mpc as the video player. I could run Arch or something instead since there's no real reason not to use Linux for this setup, but I'm lazy and I'd need a ton of extra storage to move the files somewhere else while I format the drives from NTFS to ext
[ - ] GhostCow 1 point 2.1 yearsMar 24, 2022 18:12:36 ago (+1/-0)
I know that feel. Imagine my surprise the first time I moved files over the network and realized that a gigabit connection is about a third of the speed a mechanical hard drive can write at. I'd love to upgrade to something faster but shit gets stupid expensive once you try to go faster than the standard gigabit.
I've been using Windows 7 every day since it was released and once it gets really really outdated, I'm switching to Linux. I tried Garbage 10 for a while when it came out and it was the most insufferable pile of shit I ever had to deal with. Never again.
You won't have to deal with any of that bullshit, the tracking or general discomfort of windows spyware. Primary issue .. no domain support or rather the authors have specifically turned it off.
Only issue I've ever had is QuickBooks will not work.
[ - ] foxtrot45 1 point 2.2 yearsMar 18, 2022 19:26:42 ago (+1/-0)
My one and only game I play is Windows only. How do I manage 5 dual boot gaming computers? The router. Buy a qotom box from china or similar, a AP for wifi, put opnsense on it and add dnscrypt package. Port fwd port 53 to dnscrypt and block port 53 on the wan interface. You can now block all window domains, no telemetry, ads....
yes its a lot of work and perhaps around 500 usd, but why be spied on by your isp, windows, browser, and the maker of that consumer grade router that looks like a spaceship. My head hurts when using Windows.

My work updated my work computer to 10 and there wasn't anything I could do about it. It's not terrible when it's running, but these fucking updates. I know that screen well. They take forever. Never had that problem with 7. I've got 8 at home, which a lot of people bitched about, but it's still way better than 10.
[ - ] Her0n 1 point 2.2 yearsMar 18, 2022 18:26:37 ago (+1/-0)
Windows 10 update bricked my 14+ year old pc finally. Good thing I only use it for video games and arguing with the lot of you. I suppose it’s time I built a new pc but I just can’t justify it when I have the growing season upon us.
Thing is that I thought I had it off. I connected it to my internet because I was given a game as a gift, I wanted to download it so I could play it a little after I finished my raised gardens. Came back to a bricked pc. Thanks bill, you’re keeping me out in my fields working, as I should be. Maybe he’s helping me to keep expanding my farm lol!
I put together a computer years ago that ran everything just fine except for one certain game that would BSD. I stumbled upon a forum that suggested it was the RAM. I ran MEMTEST or some such and sure enough one of the four sticks was bad. Corsair replaced all four for free and it solved the problem.
I haven’t touched my ram since I put it together lol. I’ve only updated the graphics card so far. I can just buy a new pc, but I’d rather spend my time elsewhere for now.
I should have considered my ancient hardware being the issue.
[ - ] Kozel 1 point 2.2 yearsMar 18, 2022 19:50:59 ago (+1/-0)
I used linux for a month once as a test, everything just took me longer to do. Right now if I wanted to do graphics I couldn't use Affinity suite, so I'd have to get by on Krita, and I could get my desired result most of the time but eventually there will be problems with files sent from others or missing features.
Ironically Linux can be considerably quicker to setup. Most distributions come with essentially every single driver to you could ever need preinstalled or it auto downloads.
Any good dist has packaging systems that let you name what software you want and it auto downloads and sets up the dependencies.
[ - ] allahead 1 point 2.2 yearsMar 18, 2022 17:31:07 ago (+1/-0)
Microsoft keeps renaming the tracking services and registry keys because people were disabling them. They even push updates when you have them dis-allowed. It's a battle you can't win in the long run.
All you can do with Windows is play a constant game of whack-a-mole with whatever spytech they put in there. Some of it is obvious, some of it is not. They decide what goes into the system and you don't have an infinite amount of time and resources to try and catch what they're doing.
Use a decent AV application and don't do dumb shit.
That's dumb. AV scans are after the fact, and malware can hide itself from it if the security vulnerability is bad enough. "Don't do dumb shit" is what, browsing the Web?
Nothing is ever secure.
This is retarded binary thinking. Are you going to go play in traffic because you still might get hit by a car when on the sidewalk?
I’m using pirated win10, Ican’t remember how but updates are completely off, never had an update for four years or so. It’s also patched to remove as much windows spyware/tracking software as possible. A whole lot of apps services are turned off. It doesn’t bother me at all and I’m happy with it but I always wanted to try linux
Modern Win10 builds virtually require solid state drives now. The disk activity is far more intense than with previous versions. Conventional HDD’s can’t keep up.
I use Windows 10 LTSB every day. It sucks, but DAMN, does it suck less than the retail version. Retail is the absolute worst operating system I have ever used. It's a disjointed mess, that is the result of diversity-led hiring practices.
I don't doubt the diversity issue, but what I see as the main driver of Windows getting shittier is Microsoft said: "Oh look, Google monetizes their users with ads, spies on all their shit, and they have an app store. We need to do that, too." This is also how Windows 10 got "free." They used to have a model of taxing most new PC builds and charging self-builder-non-pirates a few hundred. I think at one point they were even getting money from systems sold without an OS because "obviously people are going to pirate Windows and install it."
So, yes, the new "cool" way to do things is to not charge your users upfront but to endlessly piss them off with constant updates designed to promote whatever it is you actually make money on.
People really wouldnt notice. More than once the government has decided "Ya know what? We simply dont exist today." and nothing changed. The only impact on my life the government has ever had has been causing problems and providing some basic education.
[ - ] localsal 1 point 2.2 yearsMar 18, 2022 19:26:54 ago (+1/-0)
Fair point.
Airgapped computer? Get the updates before entering any info, and then disconnect from internet, and print the forms for mailing. No need to ever upload the data.
But since people are lazy, I'm sure the "free efile" option is appealing.
Free e-file only works if your taxes are so simple that you could probably do them on paper without too much trouble. Do anything as simple as collect a dividend on an investment and you have to pay. Or pirate it, I guess.

That's dumb. AV scans are after the fact, and malware can hide itself from it if the security vulnerability is bad enough. "Don't do dumb shit" is what, browsing the Web?
This is retarded binary thinking. Are you going to go play in traffic because you still might get hit by a car when on the sidewalk?

What’s crazy is those earlier versions run so fast.

It sucks, but DAMN, does it suck less than the retail version. Retail is the absolute worst operating system I have ever used. It's a disjointed mess, that is the result of diversity-led hiring practices.

So, yes, the new "cool" way to do things is to not charge your users upfront but to endlessly piss them off with constant updates designed to promote whatever it is you actually make money on.

More than once the government has decided "Ya know what? We simply dont exist today." and nothing changed.
The only impact on my life the government has ever had has been causing problems and providing some basic education.

Giving full tax information to a company... sounds like a horrible bargain.

Airgapped computer? Get the updates before entering any info, and then disconnect from internet, and print the forms for mailing. No need to ever upload the data.
But since people are lazy, I'm sure the "free efile" option is appealing.
