I need a new phone. Does any one have experience with privacy oriented phones?

submitted by germ22 to technology 3.1 yearsMar 18, 2022 14:19:58 ago (+15/-0)     (technology)

The phone i use right now is an old windows phone, Nokia lumia 1020. Love the phone and it's camera, but the batterie needs replacing, and it can't connect to the internet anymore over the cellphone towers. Doesn't help that there is no support for it what so ever.
I found this place, https://esolutions.shop, they promise a google free phone, which would be nice. But the camera doesn't seem that great compared to the one in my current phone, which is kinda a shame.
I can't go phone free, since i am trying to run a business. It would be helpful sometimes if i could use my phone for some of accounting features.
Any ideas?

Wow did that thing finally come out. They pushed back the release date like 2 years and I stopped following it at that point.

The pinephone does look interesting.

It's slow, can't handle mms text messages, and the camera barely works. Idk if I can even make phone calls with it. Just get a used phone and put lineageos on it, or a pixel and put calyxos or grapheneos on it

[ - ] rectangle 2 points 3.1 yearsMar 19, 2022 10:45:06 ago (+2/-0)

Have you tried running any other OS than the default? My pinephone was like that with the original postmarketOS that came with the phone. Load a different OS on a SD card.

[ - ] niggerdick69 0 points 3.1 yearsMar 21, 2022 22:23:37 ago (+0/-0)

Yeah I've tried Ubuntu touch, manjaro, and postmarketos. And I think there was 1 other popular one I tried... KDE plasma maybe?

All pretty bad. I'd rather use a dumb phone at that point

Hopefully someday it will mature enough. But for now I'll continue running my pixel with grapheneos

The ((powers that be)) don't want you to have infrastructure that isn't under ((their)) control. This is intentional.

[ - ] bonghits4jeebus 1 point 3.1 yearsMar 18, 2022 14:32:20 ago (+1/-0)

I would buy USA made. Else what is the point? Still Chinese parts I guess. 1300 is about what a high end phone costs although I think the librem is older tech. The rest is just the price you pay for not being a normie basically

[ - ] dalai_llama 0 points 3.1 yearsMar 18, 2022 16:22:34 ago (+0/-0)

So instead of buying a ton of cheap crap like a normie they make it up by charging me a shit load for one or two things. Fuck me there is no winning.

[ - ] bonghits4jeebus 1 point 3.1 yearsMar 18, 2022 23:43:33 ago (+1/-0)

Economies of scale apply to everything, man. Most people don't give a shit about their privacy. If they did, a privacy phone would be comparably priced to a regular phone.

In this particular case, I think we're kind of lucky a commercial option even exists. It takes a lot of money to get a phone factory started, and like I said I'm not sure there's that much interest.

All that said, I bet a cheap phone with a custom ROM has a comparable level of privacy. The custom hardware adds some useful things like physical on/off switches, but most of the spying is done by software.

There will be other models, after this.

These are first generation.

But the camera doesn't seem that great compared to the one in my current phone, which is kinda a shame.

Why do you care about the camera? Just how many megapixels do you need? What kind of photos are you taking that you actually need 41 million pixels? Keep in mind that a 1920x1080 image is 2 million pixels.

[ - ] germ22 [op] 3 points 3.1 yearsMar 18, 2022 18:06:49 ago (+3/-0)

Because photography is my hobby. Took this picture last fall. https://files.catbox.moe/gsuit0.jpg

[ - ] niggerdick69 8 points 3.1 yearsMar 18, 2022 18:12:13 ago (+8/-0)

If it's your hobby, buy a camera.

If I enjoy carpentry I'm not going to use a saw from a Leatherman pocket tool. I'm going to buy an actual saw and learn to use it properly.

[ - ] chrimony 0 points 3.1 yearsMar 18, 2022 20:13:09 ago (+0/-0)

And you think you needed 41 million pixels to capture that?

[ - ] germ22 [op] 0 points 3.1 yearsMar 18, 2022 22:19:21 ago (+0/-0)

Yes

[ - ] chrimony 0 points 3.1 yearsMar 19, 2022 14:27:39 ago (+0/-0)

You don't.

[ - ] niggerdick69 1 point 3.1 yearsMar 18, 2022 18:10:55 ago (+1/-0)

Exactly. And if you're wanting to take nice pictures, you can buy REALLY nice pocket cameras for $400 now.

Are you tech capable of loading a custom ROM or do you want a turnkey solution?

I like to think of myself as tech savy. Since i have only begun to look into linux phones i have not seen to many reviews. And the ones i have watched use the phone for apps, brows internet, watch videos, but rarely make and receive phone calls, or send and recieve text messages.

Are there any apps you rely on that are in the Google Play store? There are ways of getting the apk files but you'll never be 100% sure about the source. You'll be dealing with https://f-droid.org/en/ or sites similar to this https://apkpure.com/.

If you are really paranoid LineageOS works and you can use a hotspot with VOIP if you need secure comms, I don't have direct experience with it but Signal looks pretty good. https://www.signal.org/

Check out Aurora Store for apps only available via Google Play Store (it downloads directly via GPS). You can download anonymously or, if needed, login to a Google account. I can verify it works on LineageOS.

For the best security you'd get a mobile hotspot then use an open-source ARM tablet with VOIP apps. I don't think that exists yet in a readily usable way.

Buy a phone from calyxos if you want it pre-flashed. Otherwise, get a phone supported by lineageos and flash it.

Or get a pixel and flash calyxos.

Or if you want a super secure phone, get a newer model pixel and flash grapheneos.

Check out calyx and grapheneos on matrix

I just latched onto the latest version of the "CMSC-1911-NCFSD"
(Campbells Mushroom Soup Can 1911 Neutrino Collider Flip Screen Delux), it even came with 25 ft of highly durable wax coated string, I was impressed with the zero distortion in my calls, at 25 feet I could hear my wife screaming " IT'S THE FUCKING JEWS", plain as day. I think there's a few left in stock....better hurry.

What kind of business are you trying to run?

[ - ] germ22 [op] 0 points 3.1 yearsMar 18, 2022 20:00:38 ago (+0/-0)

I have a little machine shop.

[ - ] oldblo 1 point 3.1 yearsMar 18, 2022 20:32:16 ago (+1/-0)

I would like to learn a thing or two from you if that is ok.
Be it starting up and running a shop or machining both are things I should learn.

You would need to spend 5 full days to get a Android phone in a no spyware state unless your a whiz.

You want a phone with a unlockable boot loader, check out Chinese Xiaomi and others. Double check on XDA forums that others "rooted" it. I suggest you put microG on it and signiture spoofing. Put a rom on it that is missing everything google, esp google framework and store apk. Install magisk and enable zygist. zygist will allow your banking app to work. Install fdoid and the adaway, afwall, aurora (alt. playstore).

The above works but not if your addicted to social media apps. Line app did work on my phone as i needed it for a week or so. Youll get great battery life. I would suggest running a vps with nextcloud. You can sync your contacts to that with DavX.

There are very few apps i use, or intent to use. Only one i can think of would need internet connectivity (flight radar 24) the rest are things like light meter, decibel meter, and so on. Thank you for your info, i'll look into it.

It's clear a lot of responses simply listed options they saw online without knowing if they're viable or not. Hence users mentioning pine.

Of course, I don't know if you want something completely unusable or both ridiculously expensive and nearly as unusable? Maybe you do? If so, I encourage you to buy a pinephone.

A little reading a couple videos later, the option you listed appears to be pretty good if you can deal with the camera like you said. At that price, I might order one to try out. Let us know what you do and how it went.

The pixel phones have graphene os as an option and it was not difficult to flash. Its privacy oriented and you can use Aurora and f droid as your app store. All that said some apps will straight not work if you do not have google services on your phone, but if privacy is your main concern it accomplishes that job

[ - ] Deadcommiesmakemehard 1 point 3.1 yearsMar 18, 2022 22:01:43 ago (+1/-0)

The challenge is going to be using it on any cell network. In order to connect to them, you’re doing to be logged and tracked.

[ - ] GhostCow 1 point 3.1 yearsMar 18, 2022 23:55:47 ago (+1/-0)

Check which phones can run LineageOS, install that, don't install the google apps. Boom, degoogled phone. It's not hard. No reason to pay hundreds or thousands to these guys offering privacy oriented phones when you can do that shit yourself.

I use lineage on an old one plus 6t, no playstore, i only use fdroid and a couple of other apk's directly downloaded. My phone now has 2-3 day battery life and nothing google related.

I have had it just over a year on lineage(pretty easy to do yourself) and i couldnt be happier.

I love my pinephone. It's not for everybody though. You will need to use the terminal to make it useful.
