A good parent passes on what is right to the next. While granpa might have been right, he failed to teach father.

Not intentional self destruction? I do not agree with this. Ignorance is the path of least resistance, it's apathy, slothfulness. Listening blindly to what the media and government says, without learning from anything. I am sure our parents thought when a doctor said smoking was good for you, they believed it. And then they remembered nothing when it was proven wrong. How many times has this happened in modern history?

The fact that you can tell the difference from right or wrong and are teaching children the same already puts you above the rest.

However this is the natural progression of a godless society. With no predefined never changing morals, people are free to do what they want and have no shame for it. In past history, even if you did not care about God, society was built around its basic principles. What is the west currently built around?
