Two things the bad reviews focus on are microtransactions and speechcrime in the patch notes. Why are people worried about the patch notes, I dunno. Microtransactions is another matter, but that'd depend on what they're for and how they're implemented, not that they exist.

I couldn't see any microtransactions. There's some DLC, but I'm fine with that when the dev keeps providing extra content for a game after release. Their time has to be funded somehow.

I bought the game earlier and played for a few hours. It's fun, I'd recommend it. You play as the owner of a gladiators school and your goal is to win a tournament in Rome to restore your family's honour. It's actually pretty hard and you have to be quite careful about what upgrades you buy and what fights you accept in order to progress. It's very easy to pick a bad fight, lose your star gladiator and have to start from scratch halfway through.
