Does anyone here know how to get a transformer quicker than 6 months?

submitted by we_kill_creativity to AskGoats 3.3 yearsMar 13, 2022 20:08:39 ago (+12/-1)     (AskGoats)

Apparently there's a "transformer shortage"? I going to be helping a family build a homestead and we're trying to get electricity to the property, but they're told they're on a 6 month waiting list because of some sort of shortage...?f

EDIT: Why is this post, of all things, being forum slid in the comments?

Just tap into the overhead line without a transformer. Free electricity! Although you will need to convert all your appliances and electrical consumers to 7200 volts.

There has always been a transformer shortage. For at least the past 20 years. Most people wouldn't know because you rarely need to go shopping for one. Last time I heard, we rely Soley on china for transformers and we don't stockpile them. Our electric grid is kind built like a house of cards.

The DC beltway snipers could have killed far far more people if they only shot transformers.

@we_kill_creativity or /u/we_kill_creativity, however you ping here... this is what I said like last week or the week before in chat. There's a backlog of orders, no one in the US makes them, and they take forever to make. If there's ever an EMP event (nuclear or Carrington), the US is utterly screwed and at the mercy of China.

Hell, a few well-placed bits of lead would do the trick.

Why haven't you done this?

Not enough to know why you're asking. Care to enlighten?

Sell everyone on electric cars. That will kill the grid for years.

[ - ] Sturmgeschutz 1 point 3.3 yearsMar 13, 2022 23:04:26 ago (+1/-0)

I would guess draining the cooling fluid...but just a guess. What's the right answer????? I'm making a book you see...

one running without oil would overheat slower then one running while on fire

Allowing you time to get away. Especially effective if you can make holes in things at a distance.

Not for nothing, but every electrician I've ever worked around had a fucking stick in his ass. I don't know what it is. Plumbers are usually fucking chill, painters are drunks, carpenters are generally pretty sharp, but electricians seem to think their shit don't stink.

[ - ] chrimony 3 points 3.3 yearsMar 14, 2022 00:19:27 ago (+3/-0)

painters are drunks

That just might be the fumes talking.

Electricians have to be autistic or they fucking die. Those other jobs are much more forgiving of mistakes.

[ - ] yesiknow 1 point 3.3 yearsMar 14, 2022 01:34:06 ago (+1/-0)

OMG Why is that so true?

[ - ] Laputois 0 points 3.2 yearsApr 8, 2022 19:10:46 ago (+0/-0)

You have tyo be drunk to accept the monotony and suffer the repetitive motion. You are right, every painter I knew was a drunk and carpenters like cocaine. You never want your contractor to go into rehab.

[ - ] Sturmgeschutz 2 points 3.3 yearsMar 13, 2022 23:07:11 ago (+2/-0)

-Generally speaking, from my experience many electricians and those that work with electricity are assholes.

Now that's what I call painting with a broad brush.

[ - ] we_kill_creativity [op] 1 point 3.3 yearsMar 13, 2022 20:52:16 ago (+2/-1)

Interesting.

You'd be better off trying to build an off-grid setup

We are doing that too. Do you have any experience with wind power? I've seen people with small wind power setups. This is in the mountains and I'm told the way land is shaped there is a fairly constant wind in one area.

[ - ] i_scream_trucks 1 point 3.3 yearsMar 13, 2022 22:07:08 ago (+2/-1)

why not just do a gasifier hooked up to a diesel generator.

biowaste powered electricity.

Wind power BLOWS!

[ - ] Boardallday_420_2 1 point 3.3 yearsMar 13, 2022 23:24:14 ago (+2/-1)

There are only a few factories in the US that make transformers, especially the high voltage transformers that the national power grids depend on. A single high altitude EMP attack (large fission nuke) above the upper Unoted States would knock out power for months if not years. Solar flares happen and could do even worse damage, we're well overdue for one.

[ - ] SparklingWiggle 1 point 3.3 yearsMar 13, 2022 22:56:06 ago (+2/-1)

What is it you are trying to do? Best bet? Find an old or bad one and have it rewound.

And yes, they are in very short supply.

[ - ] we_kill_creativity [op] -1 points 3.3 yearsMar 14, 2022 09:58:50 ago (+0/-1)

It's just some land they have bought and we're trying to get an electric hook up from the typical powerlines you'd find running along a country road. The ONLY issue stopping it is the waitlist for a transformer. Where does one go to find a used transformer?

[ - ] SparklingWiggle 0 points 3.3 yearsMar 14, 2022 12:22:11 ago (+0/-0)

Get Megan Fox to pose on top of a classic car, you'll get transformers. You'll get Shia LaBeouf, but you'll also get transformers.

[ - ] lord_nougat 0 points 3.3 yearsMar 13, 2022 21:21:06 ago (+1/-1)

Email Megatron and he'll send some right out, probably!

[ - ] WhiteGoat 0 points 3.3 yearsMar 13, 2022 21:10:40 ago (+1/-1)

That should be the responsibility of the utility. 25kva transformers are the shortest supply. Maybe see if the lead time is shorter for a padmount transformer for underground service.

buy some estrogen pills, you'll be a transformer in no time!

[ - ] Merlynn -1 points 3.3 yearsMar 14, 2022 13:42:14 ago (+0/-1)

Probably better to look into your own power generation rather than trying to latch on to a failing system.

[ - ] Her0n -1 points 3.3 yearsMar 14, 2022 05:26:58 ago (+0/-1)

Make one yourself. It’ll take you a long time and you have to insure the windings are correct. You’ll probably have to make multiple and place them in series to step it down/up bit by bit.

I haven’t tried making one yet, but it’s totally possible to do.

[ - ] Prairie 1 point 3.3 yearsMar 14, 2022 07:31:29 ago (+1/-0)

It's not just the windings. Wire gauge, number of windings (not just ratio), insulation, core material, oil cooling, fire safety, etc.

[ - ] Her0n 1 point 3.3 yearsMar 14, 2022 10:13:06 ago (+1/-0)

I know, no point in going into it here. If he doesn’t know I doubt I have the ability to teach him through this website without spending more time on it than I can afford.

Maybe one day I’ll try to make one myself, but I have other projects to finish and share my findings here.

Things have slowed down drastically since my son was born.

[ - ] TheYiddler 0 points 3.3 yearsMar 14, 2022 08:28:51 ago (+0/-0)

Is there a downside to over building it? Copper is cheaper than buying something that doesn't exist.

[ - ] Breeder -1 points 3.3 yearsMar 13, 2022 22:32:42 ago (+0/-1)

I just know that the suppliers are favoring the guys who are buying the most.
