Every bread product sold in my local chain grocery store has soy in it.

submitted by Nosferatjew to whatever 3.1 yearsMar 13, 2022 13:34:20 ago (+57/-0)     (whatever)

Either soy bean oil or soy flour, or both. Same goes for all baked goods in the bakery section... cookies, cakes, danishes, breads, literally everything. Same is true for all pre-made sandwiches offered by this grocey store, because soy is in all the bread, the mayo, and apparently a lot of the cheeses. Not too long ago, it wasn't like this. Maybe a year, maybe a few months, it's hard to know for sure exactly when this happened. I'm not a big bread or sugary food eater, but I do like sandwiches. Thank goodness I have a bread machine, which is now one of the best appliances in my kitchen.

The feminization of American men.
I quit bread and most carbs 5 years ago and have never felt better.

[ - ] oyblat 2 points 3.1 yearsMar 13, 2022 18:30:28 ago (+2/-0)

As an Italian what can I do about pasta?

[ - ] mattsixteen24 3 points 3.1 yearsMar 13, 2022 20:46:53 ago (+3/-0)

There is nothing wrong with carbs. Don't buy into the hype and fad diets that appear every few years. Eating too many calories makes you fat. Not carbs.

[ - ] oyblat 0 points 3.1 yearsMar 13, 2022 21:37:22 ago (+0/-0)

I'm not concerned about its affect on weight but cognition.

[ - ] mattsixteen24 0 points 3.1 yearsMar 13, 2022 21:42:02 ago (+0/-0)

What are you talking about? Are carbs supposed to make you stupid now?

[ - ] oyblat 0 points 3.1 yearsMar 13, 2022 21:54:37 ago (+0/-0)

People say they give you brainfog and one thing I've heard about keto diets are people saying how clear-headed they feel.

I suffer from brainfog at times so this was appealing to me.

[ - ] mattsixteen24 2 points 3.1 yearsMar 13, 2022 22:46:42 ago (+2/-0)

I don't know. I just know that very restrictive diets don't work. The reason low carb diets are appealing is because people see quick results, but what they are really seeing is that they just lost a lot of water weight because when you eat less carbs you reduce your glycogen stores which means you don't hold as much water. One gram of glycogen holds 3 grams of water.

A guy at my work got on that keto diet. He said he felt great, but he got all small and weak looking.

[ - ] TheYiddler 0 points 3.1 yearsMar 14, 2022 01:58:58 ago (+0/-0)

Carbs are correlated with lots of bad things. Roundup, soy, sugar to replace fat in old recipes, etc. Carbs themselves may be fine, but many sources are poison.

[ - ] mattsixteen24 0 points 3.1 yearsMar 14, 2022 08:29:35 ago (+0/-0)

No,they are not. That's diet fad marketing garbage. That's like saying protein is correlated with lots of bad things. Hormones, roundup (what do cows eat), cholesterol, animal abuse.

If it's the source then blame the crappy source. Not the macro nutrient.

Either way, these things you listed are very small on the scale of causing health problems. The real issue is people eat too much and don't burn off the excess energy. So they get fat and have health problems.

[ - ] ruck_feddit 2 points 3.1 yearsMar 13, 2022 18:59:52 ago (+2/-0)

As an Italian your family matriarch should be making all your pasta by hand from scratch. I'm pretty sure we learned that in school?

[ - ] AtomicForeskin 0 points 3.1 yearsMar 14, 2022 02:22:11 ago (+0/-0)

Simple. You just exercise more. Carbs create energy and if not used will become fat.

So you quit eating soy based on conspiracy theories you read online.

When you die prematurely, that's natural selection at work.

No, I quit eating soy based on the fat slobs I see every day.

Carbs are an important component of the Krebs Cycle. Your goal shouldn’t be to eliminate carbs completely but to consume carbs in a quantity that is relative to your energy output. For example the night before a race long distance runners usually consume a meal with a very high carb count, like spaghetti.

Some expensive specialty brands still use normal ingredients.

I do, when it's open. There's a seasonal Amish store that sells good bread. But they're not open during winter.

[ - ] IfuckedYerMum 1 point 3.1 yearsMar 13, 2022 14:02:57 ago (+3/-2)

Learn to make bread. You can buy bread makers to make the entire process easier and faster. Either that or by hand, you can control what goes into it.

Why do they even need it in there from a food stand point? It does nothing for taste.

[ - ] WhiteCollarCriminal 3 points 3.1 yearsMar 13, 2022 15:04:31 ago (+3/-0)

Are you fucking kidding? I check almost every item I buy to make sure it doesn't have soy in it and now they're sneaking it into the damn bread? I may eat a grilled cheese once or twice a week and that's about my bread intake but what the fuck seriously? I doubt it's about the feminization of men, at least at the manufacturing level but the choice of who and what the (((government))) chooses to subsidize.

[ - ] 1Icemonkey 1 point 3.1 yearsMar 13, 2022 20:03:15 ago (+1/-0)

In bread it’s mostly soybean oil, not soy itself so much. The goybean oil is pure garbage. Probably worse than plain soy.

[ - ] SilentByAssociation 2 points 3.1 yearsMar 13, 2022 20:51:47 ago (+2/-0)

Sometimes the labels plainly state: MADE WITH BIOENGINEERING INGREDIENTS.

ALWAYS check labels if you're buying anything in store.

That's just for California retards who are scared of everything. It's like that other warning on everything that says may cause cancer. They put it on practically everything. It's politics. Not science.

Gmo risk is overrated. The main issue with Gmo is a government corporate issue. Control of the food supply has dwindled into fewer hands with the help of gmo's.

Lots of things are full of soy. Most chocolate? Soy. Most candies? Soy. They say "it's the carbs" but the truth is,it's the soy. The carbs don't help, especially corn syrup. But soy is just the newest poison they're hitting people with. Making your own shit is pretty easy so just do that. Don't eat premade if you can help it and just make your own food. That's the best way to avoid most of their additives.

I never understood the hate on soy. Most of is used for animal feed on commercial farms. Granted there is a problem with clearing forests in Brazil but deforestation has been a problem in Brazil and South America in general for decades. Soy didn't start that problem.

My rule it if the bread has more than five ingredients, because that’s all it takes to make bread, other than a long list of different grains, I don’t buy it.

I like Dave’s Killer Bread, it’s the best other than home baked.

[ - ] Deathstalker 0 points 3.1 yearsMar 13, 2022 19:25:45 ago (+0/-0)

Why do they even use soy over corn. Corn seems like a higher yield crop but the seasons and turnover may be different?

[ - ] germ22 0 points 3.1 yearsMar 13, 2022 23:16:41 ago (+0/-0)

I know that corn completely depletes the soil of all nutrients, growing anything after corn needs a lot of fertilizers. No idea what soy beans do to the soil.

[ - ] bites_you 0 points 3.1 yearsMar 13, 2022 19:19:46 ago (+0/-0)

in these applications i think its a stabilizer or preservative cuz everything is globalized and that means long transit times between manufacture and consumption. that said, do yall not use soy sauce? or eat tofu? phytoestrogen isnt real estrogen and ur missing out on good food

[ - ] 1Icemonkey 3 points 3.1 yearsMar 13, 2022 20:05:25 ago (+3/-0)

Soy sauce leaves no trace of soy after three years of fermentation. Tofu is shit. A few bits in a soup isn’t bad, but otherwise it’s chink feed.

[ - ] Nosferatjew [op] 2 points 3.1 yearsMar 13, 2022 19:37:47 ago (+2/-0)

I have been avoiding as much soy as i can, including all store bought breads. Making my own bread, baking my own cookies and cakes. Also have been experimenting with replacing sugar with honey. And replace any vegetable oil with lard.
Recently made some pancakes from scratch. Replaces the sugar with honey and the butter with lard. Tastiest pancakes I've made so far.

[ - ] Nosferatjew [op] 2 points 3.1 yearsMar 13, 2022 19:43:03 ago (+2/-0)

You don't have to replace butter with lard. I mean, you obviously can, but the real issue is oils... canola, soy, corn, safflower, sunflower, "vegetable", etc. Butter is generally ok, afaik, unless you're trying to stay away from dairy, in which case, cut that shit.

[ - ] germ22 1 point 3.1 yearsMar 13, 2022 23:14:10 ago (+1/-0)

I don't really like the taste of butter, wich is why i chose lard in those pancakes. Im still experimenting just to see what happens when i substitute butter with lard, so far i have noticed no appreciable difference in textures in breads of cookies, or cakes.
You are right about the oils, those are the main reasons why I have switched to lard.

[ - ] mattsixteen24 1 point 3.1 yearsMar 14, 2022 08:41:56 ago (+1/-0)

You have to be careful with lard. The cheaper lards are hydrogenated which is what causes the health problems just like shortening.

[ - ] germ22 0 points 3.1 yearsMar 14, 2022 09:38:26 ago (+0/-0)

how can i tell if it was hydrogenated or not?

How does that matter?

[ - ] coldsoak 1 point 3.1 yearsMar 13, 2022 16:39:01 ago (+1/-0)*

Ingredients are supposed to go from, highest concentration (at the start of the ingredients list) to, lowest concentration at the end of the list. My personal favorite label ambiguity "may contain one, or more of the following" WTF?

As others have said, make your own bread.

Also, bromine (a common commercial bread ingredient) is a thyroid disruptor. They used to use iodine in bread, which you do need for a healthy thyroid. That they replaced iodine with bromine is just a coincidence of course.

The soy feminizing story is a myth. Scientists discovered rats (the animals they tested on that showed high level of estrogen) metabolize soy differently from humans.

The amount of soy would need to eat to raise estrogen level is very high. If soy really feminized men, then why are there billions of oriental people? Their diet is full of soy, yet they have the highest reproduction rate on earth.

[ - ] mattsixteen24 0 points 3.1 yearsMar 14, 2022 08:43:38 ago (+0/-0)

All these down votes yet no one can counter the studies that show soy isn't the big bad bogie man everyone thinks it is.
