Yes. Resistance bands. Get a set. Cheap, portable, levels up your body weight routine game. Equal attention given to both eccentric and concentric movement of any given exercise. As you mentioned, easier on the joints. If active longevity, mobility & flexibility are as important to your fitness goals as shear strength, then resistance bands are an integral key to that kingdom. Strength + Speed = Power. Being Fighter fit/Fireman fit/Soldier fit translates more readily to real world applications and a functional life than gettin' swole for swole's sake. I never travel without a set of bands. And speaking of functionally fit, don't sleep on those kettlebells.

My gym has a full kettlebell set and I make use of it at least once a week. It's a great workout

They are good supplementary work, but I wouldn't get them with the intention being that is all you will use to work out. I know there are people out there that will argue those bands are all you need for a complete workout, and they are right in a sense, but that is if you're in a situation where you don't have anything else. So I say get them and use them, but also lift and do all of the other stuff too. Bands can be good for your joints if used correctly, and you definitely can do a lot of different things with them. I'd say get them, but make sure you get the ones that are complete circles(like a big rubber band) and not the straight single band ones.

They are good for home workouts. Just be careful not to pop yourself with them. They do break, eventually, and when that handle flies off and you hit yourself in the face, it kind of hurts

Oh man. That really gives you something to think about. That gives me heebie-jeebies. High-tension wires of any kind make me a little nervous. Any time I tune a guitar that's very flat and has to be cranked a good amount, I turn my face away or even put on safety glasses. Especially acoustics!

A good weight set may cost more, but you will get a better workout. If you've been injured and want to rehab a part of your body, resistance bands are a good start. Personally never felt "challenged" enough using them.

I got of those loop bands to use when I was rehabbing my hip/hamstring injury a year ago and they were really useful, and I still use them to warm up sometimes, but I agree that they are not really challenging enough to use as a real workout.

It may not be the smartest, but I've lifted without spotters for many years. It helps if you are already working reps of 8-12 and progress in those ranges. Added some weight? Try for 8. Want to warm up?
Do a set of 12-15. Knowing how to bail out of jams also helps (no lock collars on your bench/squat and using dumbbells instead of a bar).

Your range of movement will probably be better with resistance bands. I considered them along with the Bowflex adjustable dumbbells. Ended up going with 2" dumbbells and a bunch of plates (at worst I can always sell off olympic weights and make a good bit of what I paid for back.)

It's better than nothing, but I've never used a resistance machine I really liked. It's not the same as weights. You only feel the "weight" at the end of the push, instead of the entire time

I have a bowflex. There is something artificial about it that just doesn't feel like a good workout.

Most Bowflex machines make neat clothes drying racks in the garage

I know what you mean. Sure you can use them until your arms(or whatever) are some, but it has the same grubby tension and doesn't feel as satisfying or productive as something like freeweights.

Staple of the physical therapy world for decades. My wife blew her ACL in 2004 (and again in 2012, said fuck it and now goes without), has been using bands since 2004 for a large number of exercises. Ours aren't excessively heavy/strong as we use them for her knee and my shoulder (rotator cuff injury).

We also have free weights and use those too, but closing in on 6 decades and the bands are more appealing more of the time.

Top tip, visit a PT place and ask if you can buy some of their supply. It comes in a big roll and you tie the ends together. no handles (you just grab the inside of the loop/material), infinitely adjustable lengths, cheaper, packs smaller (we have some in all of our vehicles, never know when you'll be stuck somewhere with time to kill).

They can augment a set of dumbbells well. A dumbbell(or any fixed weight) has a constant weight. It remains the same throughout the range of motion. A band changes through the range. Being weak at the beginning and hard at the end.

Id say they are a nice addition to a small home gym. Try adding a band to a dumbell exercise.

Theyre cheap anyway so

Excellent, excellent advice all around, especially about stretching and ego lifting. I do use kettlebells though as part of a light day. Stuff like Turkish get-ups. It's a good way to get some cardio and blood flow into the muscles. It's also a good way to warm up for heavier stuff. Some of my best lifting has happened after doing a couple of rounds of swings.
