Any good recommendations for a device to draw/take notes with a stylus?

submitted by localsal to technology 3.1 yearsMar 11, 2022 22:53:30 ago (+3/-0)     (technology)

Looking to get more digital with my work portfolio, and if anyone has suggestions for a good device to look at, it would be appreciated.

I've looked at drawing tablets that connect to a computer, and while they would work, the tethered nature and spotty reviews has put them on the back burner.

A convertible laptop that can take stylus inputs, doesn't have to be pressure sensitive, could work. An easy to carry device that is ready to scribble/sketch any time would be nice.

I looked at the ipad offerings, but for the price and the size, they don't appeal to me. A 15-17" laptop might be nice too. I've looked at a few of the microsoft surface devices, but not with the stylus. If Linux works on a surface with the stylus I would be very pleased.

Thanks in advance.

For years, I used a PDA for notes. It was a Median brand. It took me a week or so to get really good with the graffiti input, but I thought it was great. Idk if they still make things like that?

I actually haven't come across any in my limited search. I think the closest thing are the galaxy note type phones with stylus input.

I wouldn't have the faintest idea how to draw on a small pda :)

They might not make them now. This was ~20 years ago. I used it as a steno pad that never ran out. I admittedly glossed over the drawing part. Draw cherries instead of pineapples, I guess?

Most likely as tech evolved, the need for a small pda with the shorthand was no longer needed. The ability to capture from the entire screen seemed like a more usable feature. Although translating scribbling to text with the shorthand was (and is) an amazing technology for sharing easily.

i hate microsoft but the surface pro was the tits for my old job, did all of my paperwork on the fly on it as well as running the projector off it wirelessly. go 2 similar function far smaller size. definitely not the highest powered devices but definitely did the job.

stay away from the pro x like the plague.

Thanks.

Any experience with Linux on a surface?

I dont personally as i was able to do everything i need natively github has a list of linux capable surface devices and pro 7 is on it so its doable i just dont personally have a need to do it.

My issue when comes to these devices is the physical architechture. Most 2 in 1s are just tablets with a usb keyboard you pull off and toss to the side, the surface i can just flip around the back and hold it like a notepad and do my stuff.

My use case was portability for work teaching offsite classes, started with a surface go, which was a full miniture pc rather than an oversized mobile phone, wasnt super powerful but was 100% out of the box exactly what i wanted and needed and shitloads cheaper and more useful than the comparable priced devices before that i was fucking around with a big ass laptop then a nuc

Scaled up to a pro 7 a few months later when i was finally earning proper money and i had all the above plus a full sized laptop. Then ya get a win 10 iso and a certain KMS package, upgrade the lot to 10 pro, install office, activate the lot offline. Acrobat is a cunt but can be forced into full functionality without paying shit and allowed me to hand sign all of my class lists and correct paperwork, then email it all off without printing or scanning diddly shit which saved me a good few hundred in paper and ink per year.

Rock up to site, dongle for presentation clicker in the port, epson projectors you can buy a wifi dongle for so that could be wherever the hell i want it or connect to a clients smart tv. Easy as fuck and no cables, most importantly less shit i had to carry around unpack or pack up

Only other device i had the same liking to was a cheap shit bauhn tablet i got from aldi i forced win 10 on to but was dodgy as fuck.

I have notebooks and sketchbooks. I take pictures of the ones I want digitized.

I just wonder if the creative process of drawing and redrawing on something digital before finalizing might be worth it.

I have a several random pads just for brainstorming, but they get cluttered and very disorganized. Most of the ink works get scribbled out, and the pencil work isn't worth erasing most of the time. A quick delete button for something like that could help me - but I'm just guessing for now.

I've looked at the wacom drawing pads - which are nice, but a big investment for something that is tethered and might end up collecting dust.

edit: the knockoffs and copycats seem to be hit and miss with reviews. While cheaper, they seem like more of a gamble while still being tethered.

This one looks like it has promise.

A combination of art/sketchwork and just general ideas that I like to jot down with some doodles/diagrams.

If I learn how to do some sketching for art, I might start doing that too.

thanks
