You're just as likely to be getting nuclear as coal, while renewables aren't so far behind. Power plants are going to be more efficient than an ICE (transmission losses are usually rather low), since they have much better control over the process. The electric engines themselves are also around 95% efficient, so overall electric cars are better for the environment even if they use non-renewable sources. The main issue with electrics is the batteries being absolutely terrible for the environment, using rare earth minerals that get processed in nations like China. And, of course, electric vehicles are prohibitively expensive for most Americans.
