Imagine building a 60-100ft high rock wall on an 80° cliff, just to extend your floor plan 10ft.
Imagine what the difference is in price per square foot of that little section.

Like a 20 bedroom mansion where 2 of them cost more then the other 18.

He came damn close to bankrupting his kingdom building that thing, and while he was distracted Bavaria was all but absorbed into the second reich. In the end there was a minor revolution and he was taken into custody. He "accidentally drowned" shortly afterwards and his brother took over.

So yeah... expensive little extension.

No kidding. I love history like that but don’t know shit about that period

He was nicknamed the "swan prince" because he loved wagner and operas so much. Worth reading about if you have the time. It'd be interesting if Bavaria had had a strong ruler and remained independent. Hard to know what would have happened.

The King paid for his construction projects by private means and from his civil list income. Contrary to frequent claims, the Bavarian treasury was not directly burdened by his buildings.[30][34] From 1871, Ludwig had an additional secret income in return for a political favour given to Otto von Bismarck.[nb 6]

Still sounds like he sold his kingdom for a really nice castle to me, but thanks for the correction.

Imagine centuries later still having the lights on.

You know the history behind it? It was a vanity project for a (probably) gay king.

Awesome castle though. I think every country should build a giant castle once per generation just to have cool tourist attractions around the place. It'd be way cooler than building yet another sportsball stadium that looks like all the other ones.

But how could we showcase the very best of us without sportsball stadiums?

White cultural appropriation yet again. These equivalent folks produced the same results:

Same. It's absolutely gorgeous. I love seeing pictures of it and the surrounding hills in various seasons (especially winter).

the famous fairy tale castle.

I used to live 3 km from there, been there many times. It is a testament to Germanic ingenuity, and King Ludwig's based insanity.
