Moments ago, I pulled into a local gas station. Once I was close enough to the store-front, I noticed a big sign that said, "COVID TESTS ARE BACK". After some quick thinking, I decided to go in and let the guy know that the sign is going to cost him some business.
"Just to let you know: I came to buy some gas but saw your sign about covid tests and promoting the panic so now I'm going to go somewhere else."
At first he was confused, "whaddya mean?"
"People need to start calming down."
He started taking offense, "It's not a panic. People need tests and I'm letting them know they're available."
"It's a panic, though. So you're going to sell more test kits but less gas today." And I walked out. As an afterthought, I should've added, "You might want to think about which is the better long term business model."
I have to confess down here in Australia we are juggling both Great Causes at the moment. Places can advertise "covid tests sold here" and "free Ukraine" at the same time.
They should package the covid tests in blue and yellow boxes for distribution in Australia, it would save a lot of hassle.
I didn't mind so much that he was selling them. I think if most businesses knew there was a social cost to advertising covid paraphernalia, though, it would go a long way towards helping people move on. Otherwise, normies will see the sign and think, "Oh yeah--I forgot I need tests for {upcoming event}. I'd better get some." And then the kit box is in their home constantly reminding them. All the while, the ads are also reinforcing the idea that the paraphernalia is somehow important and, gosh, everyone must be buying these if they were sold out and the ad is so big. There's so much social proof. Clearly my hysteria is justified.
Yeah, seconded. So long as businesses aren't going out of their way for kung-flu shit I don't mind. The places with big signs about health threats and cosmetic masks can fuck off.
FYI, at a mini mart with sodas, beer and snacks, the gas is a loss leader. They literally make their money in the candy isle. But I hear ya, I would have done the same. I passed a Japanese restaurant that the wife and I would have dropped a $100 bill at for lunch due to therE “must show I’d and proof of vax” sign, and went into the Chinese place right next door.
