So are they made to "clean" your gun, or made to actually clean your gun? Can't they have it attach without threading on?

They are designed to catch the cleaning fluid that you pour into the breech of your weapon. While effective, I know nobody who actually cleans their weapon that way. Some people think they make effective silencers/suppressors if you drill the appropriate sized hole(s) in them, but I wouldn't know anything about that.
