Why don’t you have chickens?

submitted by Native to whatever 2.2 yearsMar 3, 2022 03:38:23 ago (+47/-1)     (whatever)

Food prices are going up. I was born in the USSR, America is about to experience Great Depression lifestyles. You have the opportunity to get ahead of the trend. Get chickens and start a garden. Move out of the cities while you can.

We will see America collapse in our life time. This is inevitable. Plan and be prepared while you can and while you can afford it

My father has. We are getting eggs every day. Eggs. Eggs. Fucking eggs. God help us.

Hard boil them when you get too many. They become a nice, easy to eat snack.

[ - ] allahead 0 points 2.2 yearsMar 3, 2022 15:29:05 ago (+0/-0)

Have you tried any of the non-refrigeration methods for long term egg storage? Burying in salt, etc.

[ - ] 3Whuurs 1 point 2.2 yearsMar 3, 2022 23:52:04 ago (+1/-0)

Coating them in mineral oil can keep them for up to 6-9 months.

[ - ] yesiknow 12 points 2.2 yearsMar 3, 2022 04:21:55 ago (+12/-0)

"Move out of the cities..." is key.

Urban morons didn't know why cities had bylaws against keeping chickens. Told people to get chickens and then had to deal with an onslaught of rats. Everyone got rid of their trendy city chickens.

[ - ] Native [op] 7 points 2.2 yearsMar 3, 2022 04:24:37 ago (+7/-0)

And by onsloaught of rats you mean black people right?

Dem bike enthusiasts love dem kentuky fry chiken!

Seriously, quail or chicken. Get one or two

[ - ] UncleDoug 4 points 2.2 yearsMar 3, 2022 06:28:18 ago (+4/-0)

It probably has less to do with sustainability and more to do with pest infestation like rats, rooster noises interfering with neighbours work schedules and chicken droppings.

[ - ] 2Drunk 3 points 2.2 yearsMar 3, 2022 04:25:28 ago (+3/-0)

I've been to Mexico. I'd rather eat rats than bugs.

Get cats. There isn't a chicken farm in America without cats or a cat colony near by. The fuckhead behind me had a compose pile and rats and mice were a problem. My cat and the neighbors made short work of those little fuckers. They also left dead mice all over that moron's back patio. Of course he's a dumbass but his wife made him get rid the pile when she put two and two together.

Very true and thanks for pointing that out. Everyone starting a self-farming operation needs to be aware of all types of natural invaders, be it mice, bears, or coyotes and plan accordingly.

[ - ] totes_magotes 7 points 2.2 yearsMar 3, 2022 07:54:34 ago (+7/-0)

Chickens only lay for a few years. They're among the worst egg-laying fowl you can have. Ducks, quails, hell even guineas are better.

Further, most people would be out of the cities if they could 1. afford it, 2. find work in their field in rural areas, 3. depend on city-only services such as trash pickup and public transit, etc.

[ - ] Native [op] 2 points 2.2 yearsMar 3, 2022 13:31:20 ago (+2/-0)

1. When they stop laying eat them
2. If you can’t afford to move out of the city now, you will be dead and starving later. Not trying to exaggerate here. There’s tons of work in rural communities people are just afraid of the unknown. Even when obvious advice is obvious

[ - ] totes_magotes 0 points 2.2 yearsMar 3, 2022 17:46:53 ago (+0/-0)

If you have to eat your flock every 3 to 4 years, then you need to deal with husbandry which is a lot more than "just get chickens for eggs!" Did you not stop and think before posting this shit? Other birds lay pretty much all their lives and you don't have to worry about aggressive roosters. The very fact that you can't even plan this far ahead, tell everyone this, and then try to rationalize it while ignoring facts should tell everyone that you are the absolute last person anyone should take advice from. If you can't plan ahead, you shouldn't do it. If you can't tell everyone all the bad points of your advice, you should keep your dicksucker shut because eventually, even if it's not about birds, you're going to cause someone financial loss or even to get hurt.

[ - ] middle_path 1 point 2.2 yearsMar 3, 2022 19:15:06 ago (+1/-0)

You guys realize you're fighting over birds, right?

[ - ] Kung_Flu 1 point 2.2 yearsMar 3, 2022 19:48:13 ago (+1/-0)

Why is tending a flock so damn hard? Let your birds lay eggs. If you have too few birds, let the eggs hatch. When you have too many birds you eat them, starting with the oldest first. You're going to want to eat more than eggs anyway so add a little chicken to your diet.

[ - ] totes_magotes 0 points 2.2 yearsMar 3, 2022 20:49:32 ago (+0/-0)

The problem is saying "just have chickens for eggs" isn't even close to enough information for people. To present "just get chickens" as though it's "that simple" and doesn't need extra thought is a lie. I can't fucking stand liars.

1. Feed
2. Housing
3. Disease
4. Laying periods
5. Husbandry
6. Killing the animal, humanely
7. Cleaning, preparing, and butchering the animal, safely.
8. Animal husbandry
9. Roosters can kill you. Learn how and how to prevent it.

And the list goes on a ways. "Just get chickens" is a fuckin' lie.

Ducks are really messy and make big mud pits.

[ - ] Teefinyomouf 2 points 2.2 yearsMar 3, 2022 08:39:17 ago (+2/-0)

Free range solves this. Dig them a pond and have dogs for security.

[ - ] mannerbund 0 points 2.2 yearsMar 3, 2022 10:23:59 ago (+0/-0)

Sufficient space is the key to get the free range requirement settled- I've chickens for that particular reason, they can lay in a smaller area with much less mess.

[ - ] BlowjaySimpson 1 point 2.2 yearsMar 3, 2022 12:07:38 ago (+1/-0)

Because I have bees.

Honey never, ever, goes bad (assuming you're not an incompetent moron)
I already have 4~5 times more demand than I do supply, instant value
wax for candles
propolis for medicinal (antimicrobial, anti-fungal, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, and anti-tumor)

No shit, no noise, benefits all plants through pollination.

Eggs and chickens are a dime a dozen in rural America. I nearly run 2 or 3 over everytime I leave the house... EASY to trade for.

Oh, and I have the fixins for a still.... been meaning to get that together, maybe this summer. Not sure if it'd be worth more as a fuel source (I have a couple points-and-carb vehicles that would be simple to convert to alcohol runners), or intoxication... no reason it couldn't do both since the heads and tails aren't exactly prime drinking.

Why don’t I have chickens?... You're joking, right? I live in an apartment. Eggs are not that expensive. I don't want a disgusting bird living here plus my dog would kill it and I would let him.

One day, when I get a larger place with a backyard, I am open to the idea of a chicken for eggs. Definitely not in my list of priorities.

You need to calm down, the world is not ending just yet. Did the stressful news cycle get to you?

[ - ] yesiknow 3 points 2.2 yearsMar 3, 2022 09:03:01 ago (+3/-0)

I came across old ads one day and during the depression a dozen eggs were the equivalent of ten dollars. But farmers drove their goods to cities and men with carts on wheels did neighborhood circuits selling stuff.

[ - ] solomonpapermaster 1 point 2.2 yearsMar 3, 2022 10:46:20 ago (+1/-0)

[ - ] Sleazy 1 point 2.2 yearsMar 3, 2022 14:29:02 ago (+1/-0)

ten minutes by car? how long on foot?

[ - ] solomonpapermaster 1 point 2.2 yearsMar 3, 2022 14:34:10 ago (+1/-0)

It's actually 10 minutes on foot, it's really close. I like living close to the river, the winters are harsher but the summers are cooler and you can enjoy nature, fish, make a BBQ, etc

[ - ] Sleazy 0 points 2.2 yearsMar 3, 2022 14:57:43 ago (+0/-0)

A river makes the winter harsher? I don't understand that one. It's not like a large body of water really

[ - ] solomonpapermaster 0 points 2.2 yearsMar 3, 2022 16:24:49 ago (+0/-0)

Slightly but yes you can feel the difference. It's a really large river so you have all that space with no trees or building and the wind just blows really strong and unhindered. Bodies of water do have an effect on the weather.

[ - ] Reawakened 3 points 2.2 yearsMar 3, 2022 07:08:52 ago (+3/-0)

Sheep are also nice to have if you have adequate fencing. Fencing is a key for sheep. They're easy to kill and clean and they don't provide too much meat that you have to worry about preserving. Kill them young and they are pretty tasty.

[ - ] Leafonthewind 2 points 2.2 yearsMar 3, 2022 17:28:24 ago (+2/-0)

We do not want you in our rural areas. City people are useless, ignorant and endlessly lazy. You wouldn’t last a day on the farm or in the woods. You are clueless about self-sufficiency and are dead weight to the people around you.

Stay away. You are not us.
City people have created the fall; wallow in it. Leave us out of your contrived political dramas and laundry lists of laws.

Keep out.

You can be stupid and stay and fight or go somewhere else. A nation is not it's land and borders. A nation is it's people. We have lost that concept. Unfortunately it's most likely too late and impossible to recover what we have lost and to actually heal the physical land.

Quail are a loophole that you are allowed. Quail are fun and great especially if you don’t have much room. Definitely more difficult to make a quail scramble with the eggs though

It's good advice if you can manage it and need to get out. My son lives in the city. Has chickens and rabbits (and a garden). He also lives less than a mile from a river that he can, and does, pull 12" trout out of on occasion. He can commute on a scooter or walk to work and makes good money and he ain't moving no matter what you say.

Hold an egg up to the sun if you can see through it good to go if you can't or if you can make out like a dark spot there is one in there.

Funny story my daughter didn't pay attention to me doing this or when I told her to do so and she ended up getting an egg that had a chick in it. She freaked out and threw the egg in the sink but then the poor chicks head came off and went into the sink catcher. She was traumatized didn't eat eggs for almost a year or so.

[ - ] MaryXmas 2 points 2.2 yearsMar 3, 2022 08:35:02 ago (+2/-0)

If you get the eggs every day, you won't have any problems like that. You may still get a bad egg but it won't be because it's fertilized.
If you collect eggs every 10 days, you will have a nightmare of dead pre-developed chicks.
