Probably a few years of breakage due to contraction and some dude is like "we need something better than just building fires on the tracks".

Science to the rescue.

Then I thought - why doesn't he heat the other side too? And answered that by saying if it is clamped together when both sides are hot, it will probably destroy the bolts when both sides cool.

Crazy how almost 100,000 miles of train track can stay together through all the temperature cycling.

Apparently it doesn't stay together forever, hence the need for the repair.

It makes me wonder if it's smarter to stuff it with shims and weld them together, then cut the track elsewhere to keep an expansion joint in the area. It would effectively make the track longer, which it apparently needs to be.

They do weld them together also. There are vids on jewtube showing the process.

Nothing lasts forever.

But the fact that a huge length of track can expand and contract throughout the entirety of the weather cycle and not have constant derailments is pretty amazing.

Very nice video.

The "White People" part is obviously his diligence in doing a great job at work, making sure the repair is completed as best as possible. Also seems like he enjoys the work.

I thought it was maintaining the infrastructure

You know there's a sub called WhitePeopleThings, right?

Right because we all know railroads only hire white people. SMH.

I honestly enjoyed watching him repair the rail. He seems like such a pleasant fellow.

What a nice old timer. 10/10 would listen to his stories again.
