Deterring aggression = get more aggressive.

NATO wants it nuclear and so does Russia. There's no reason for them to be so obsessive about the Ukraine since the USSR went - but they have been.

Never in that time did the Ukrainians ever, ever get a simple referendum asking them if they wanted to part of the EU.

When Quebec had their referendum on sovereignty it was incredibly close to exactly 50/50 but ended it.
