Honestly, it's hard to feel too bad for Russia: All of these wars are over bits of countries that Russia clipped off for itself over the years. Imagine relations souring between the US and the UK, so the US ships some arms to the IRA to see if they can take the north back. Not that you'd have any sympathy for CIA pot stirrers but you might for the northern Irish.

I never knew anything about the internal politics of that sphere of the world back then but I remember the conflict.
What was the reaction of the rest of the world like compared to now?
Was there as many countries rolling out sanctions and support as now?
