The EU and NATO started flooding Ukraine with weapons and cash in January this year to fight what they only called Russia's pending invasion of Ukraine.

On 14 Feb Kiev announced a "military exercise in Eastern Ukraine" on Feb 16th; meaning Donetsk and Lugansk. Ukraine is the invader. I'm not sure why people are going "oh poor Ukraine", but I'm hearing it around me too.
