I would say that economic support is more likely to be the strong hand that monogamist males have to play. Creating excess non-productive bureaucratic jobs and redistributing wealth through them is what has undermined monogamy. But you see the crux of the issue— balance of power. When males can have more than one female they can play one off against another. White males are pretty solicitous to women and its because they are selected for traits that please women.
