That's a hard question to answer. A lot. Or at the least the best he was able to.

How to break the law? Or rather that the law was a set of rules issued by The State to restrict behavior that may or may not benefit mankind? Idk, I might be going deeper here into his thought process than what it really was. I'll give examples to help the rest of you understand.

I was taught to drive machinery/cars/equipment from an early age and at 14 I started making long 300 mile trips down state highways WITH him so that I could master, and he could rest during, driving. Maybe he was just an asshole and wanted to be chauffeured?

If it moved across our land it got shot and put on the dinner table. Hunting seasons were for other people. I ate snapping turtle in the spring, venison in summer and duck in fall. Squirrel is an anytime snack.

Drinking is what men do. You "train" until 12, then you're a man.

Women/girls are to be cherished but they are still women and belong in the kitchen, pregnant.

Firearms settle disputes if needed and should be quick at hand. Children shouldn't play with them but must know how and when to use them.

Vehicles are like family, after they break down and leave you stranded a few times you trade them in.

Holy shit! He's an asshole.

So one day the clutch on my car burned out. started fixing it, got interrupted half way through by my sisters mate who asked him nicely to fit a car stereo for him which he did, paid him with a bottle of Glenfiddich, then went back to fixing my clutch so i could drive to the first day of my apprenticeship the next day.

Passed away from a heart attack at work about 30 minutes after i started my first job on that site. Where he worked.

That Glenfiddich is about all me and my uncle could hold down that night.

Took a photo with me on his lap giving me a hug. Then he died. Everyone said he loved me like there was no tomorrow. Cancer sucks. Bye dad, I'll catch up to you soon enough.

I had a wonderful dad! Probably the best thing he did to prove his love was not just one thing. It was the day to day, Every day, in so many different ways, an accumulative effect. It all added up to his great love he had for all of his children.

Ditto, no one act makes a great father. My Dad showed his love for his family every day for 83 years. I often thought if I could be half the man he was I'd be alright. Whether I meet that goal will be up to others I guess.

What I noticed in the average working class homes as a child was the outside tinkering on the house the fathers were involved with. The stairs don't look safe? the stairs are ripped out and replaced. The pathway looks uneven and hints at something bad? The pathway is ripped up and new cement or stones is laid. The heating system was the dad equivalent of a knitting hobby and none of their kids ever formulated a notion that heat might not work one day.

When I was 9 yrs old my father presented me with the bodies of aborted twins to dispose of in a backyard incinerator, I had spoken up in their favor when Mother announced she was off to have an abortion, later he was to tell me he "should not have let me live" .. he went to Hell in 1993, mother entered the same place after he murdered her in 1980.

He cheated on my mother then raised another family in another state and now he is giving the family heirloom passed down through generations from father to son to my bastard half-sister because she went to college when I refused to.

This is an interesting question, one I’ve been trying to answer myself. So far I am angry with him for not protecting me from my violent and angry, abusive mother.

I’ll have to get back to you on this.
Ask me again in six months.

What should he have done to save you? Divorce her? Don't know about where you are but here where I am, back when my children were young, the "judge" around here always, ALWAYS, gave custody to momma. One of my good friends begged for his children, the woman begged the judge to give Him the children. She flat out told the judge that she was going to spend her life drinking, doing drugs, and screwing as many guys as she could fit up in that thing, and the children would just be in her way! She didn't want them. This POS "judge" gave her custody anyway.
Your dad's situation may be similar.
I know an evil woman that told her husband to go ahead and try to take the children. The judge would give her custody and then she could do whatever she wanted to his son!
Just make sure you know all the facts before making a judgement on him. Give him a chance to explain himself.

Parents were happily married for 45 years before he died when I was forty. It’s more that he was overindulged in his teaching career (spending more time on other people’s kids than his own) to not maybe fully grasp just how incompetent my mother was. Also, when the shtf around the house, he always took her side against me. He never really knew just how much of a cunt she was when he wasn’t around, as in, at work.
There’s a lot more to it, but that’s the short story. I haven’t spoken to her in eight years since the last time she fucked me over.

I wish I could cut my mother off too, but I’m too fucking weak and get overwhelmed with guilt

He asked me and my wife to move in with him so I could save the money I was paying for rent in order to buy a house. He didn't really want the extra people in the house but he did it because he wanted me to be a homeowner.

My Dad and Mom were both piece of shit hippie addicts. One of the best moments of my life was when the state of Florida stripped parental rights way from my parents and awarded it to my Grandparents when I was 15.

It's too bad my parents child rasing method (or lack of therefore) resulting in permanently fucking up my younger sister's life.

Your father sounds like a good man OP. You should honor him, and consider yourself lucky to have such a man as a parent.
