I don’t agree. There are some sympathetic cops. The police force is not ideologically homogeneous. But a lot of guys on the fence will set aside their qualms for a pay check. A lot of the more “conservative” dudes are retiring.

They have. They've made the public face of policing in Canada hostile and hateful.

The next time one is killed, nobody is going to care. They won't go stand by the side of the road when the funeral parade goes by, and they won't say bad things about the people that killed them.

They'll be less inclined to call the police when they see a crime and less inclined to be friendly when they can't avoid them.

The head of the RCMP is selected very carefully because there's been no investigations that ever went anywhere after accusations of political corruption came out for a very long time.

Their training over the years has increased to alienation and combative attitudes. They've gone Stanford prison experiment and can fuck off now.

There is a difference between beating one guy's ass at a bar, and starting what could potentially have been a mob-level conflict (on the less extreme side) or the start of a civil war (on the extreme side). I'm not advocating for inaction or action. I am just pointing out that there are serious considerations here. If a trucker had attacked a cop in that moment, it may have meant many other innocent people (including the elderly and children) would get hurt when the police reacted.

This won't be popular, but another factor to consider here is that this situation was slightly ambiguous re: the cop's intent. There is a difference between a cop that intentionally directs his horse to trample someone, and a cop walking in a line of other cops on horseback, who ignores the proximity of the crowd and clods on someone who got in the way of the line. I'm not justifying what happened. The entire demonstration with the horses was bullshit. What I'm suggesting is that the convoy members might have responded with a counterattack if it had been clearer the cops were actively hurting people, rather than passively hurting people.
