Land or Family?

submitted by SUV_dindu_nuffin to AskGoats 3.2 yearsFeb 18, 2022 21:02:29 ago (+16/-0)     (AskGoats)

My hope is getting out of the city in a few months, hopefully by the end of the year. The area I live in is so fucking expensive that you CANNOT buy any rural land for 2 to 3 hours drive, fortunately the sale of my house with jumpstart getting about 100 acres and building something nice in the rural area. So my options are:

1. Land and rural living
2. Being close to family

Personally I would value family but my side of the family is in different countries and basically nomadic. So it’s my wife’s family and they are 50%+ useless trash. So I’m sort of valuing land more.

What’s more important? Fucking off and leaving the city, or staying with family?

How much time do you spend with your "family" now? How often do they come to see you?

If they're as bad as you say, you'll probably end up having to take care of them anyway. I'd go with land.

Dude you're married? Your wife IS your family! Take your wife and any kids and fuck off out of the city warp speed. Make a nice home for your family on a lot of land so you've got privacy and if the in-laws want to see you you'll have plenty of notice.

This also allows you to build a new stable location for extended family members that may need a hand in future days. Maybe even if you think they're worthless trash.

Fucking rights! Out of cities. ASAP.

I had the same choice to make three years ago. My wife’s family is also 50% trash while mine is scattered across the USA and a few other countries.

I went with land.

I now have a homestead and don’t have to leave my house to work for more than two or three days a month. I plan to build a house for my parents next on my property. If I stayed to try to help them all I’d have nothing and they’d all be in the same situation.

I’m biased, but I say pick the land.

"I plan to build a house for my parents next on my property. If I stayed to try to help them all I’d have nothing and they’d all be in the same situation."

Her0n, you have the absolute right idea.

Convincing my mother to move from their home for the last 35 years has proven to be a challenge. She wants a warmer climate, but refuses to move to such an area.

I’m just going to build the damn house anyway and whomever gets the wheelchair accessible house gets it…

Ha! The wife and I had the same talk just this week. Parents are losing the ability to care for themselves, some faster than others. We're just going to put house the other side of the tree line and in her words "rotate them through there as they die".

Her0n, would you be comfortable sharing more about your transition to homesteading? There are a few of us interested in making a similar move and any insights you have from having done it could be interesting and beneficial to us.

What do you want to know?

[ - ] DonaldJTrump 0 points 3.2 yearsFeb 25, 2022 10:45:22 ago (+0/-0)

Okay, one major issue I've come up against is what to do about housing. If shit really hits the fan we can't depend on mass produced materials. Have you given any thought or acted on that? If so, how did it go? What worked? Didn't?

[ - ] Her0n 0 points 3.2 yearsFeb 25, 2022 23:20:22 ago (+0/-0)

Well I’ve only been able to supply materials to build my home from a plot of trees about the size of a football field. I used a chainsaw with a planning rig to cut my trees into boards. I haven’t done anything en masse, that’s an interesting conundrum that I haven’t addressed yet.

I only build the houses one at a time, usually one per acre or two.

Is that all wood that goes into the building of the house or does that include clearing land around it? How big of a house do you get out of that? Did you get a mill? Any issues operating it?

[ - ] Her0n 0 points 3.2 yearsMar 3, 2022 14:11:37 ago (+0/-0)

There are too many variables to reliably say how much timber you get per sqft. The area I live in is densely forested, so it’s a lot of work to clear land. I had enough lumber to build a single story home that has 1200 sqft.

I also have a small barn (4 stalls) a chicken coop. A workhouse that’s 500 sqft an outhouse, and a separate 550 sqft guest studio. I had a lot of good lumber trees on site, very lucky.

[ - ] natehiggers 5 points 3.2 yearsFeb 18, 2022 21:05:30 ago (+5/-0)

Get out of the city, your wife and kids are your biggest responsibility.

[ - ] Version6 2 points 3.2 yearsFeb 19, 2022 03:21:25 ago (+2/-0)

Get out. Your family will need a fall back location. They will be along soon enough.

[ - ] Merlynn 2 points 3.2 yearsFeb 19, 2022 02:58:04 ago (+2/-0)

Go to rural land, build a nice big house that can handle a lot of people. If shit hits the fan, your family will have some place safe(ish) to go. Recycle the trash into working people and go from there.

Leave now

Live in the country. Embrace your white roots. Raise your children right.

[ - ] GrayDragon 2 points 3.2 yearsFeb 19, 2022 01:42:39 ago (+2/-0)

Land. Your extended family is important, but they should realize they are in a bad land area as well and follow you eventually. And as others said, your wife is your central family now.

[ - ] Belrick 1 point 3.2 yearsFeb 19, 2022 00:56:41 ago (+1/-0)

Heya.

Five years ago I sold up home businesses and took my wife and three daughters to a 10 acre remote lifestyle block.

One immediate suggestion is that land takes work. 100 acres is a lot of land.

Mine gives me all the beef and lamb and eggs we can eat.

A planted acre is more than enough crops too.

You’re best off grid asset, hands down, is your neighbours.
Fight harder to find at least 1 family member to bring with you.
Find some middle ground, the entire fucking continent is full of cities of white ppl that left their tribe for solo life in the country and lost their kids back to the same faggot Mecca they thought they could escape.
Tribe above all.

They don't make more land. "they" make more people. People are poops. From the Autistic kingdom of value! ALWAYS remember, people are poops.

[ - ] RecycledElectrons 0 points 3.2 yearsFeb 19, 2022 07:42:37 ago (+0/-0)

You should get both. Each one should help you get the other.

Learn a trade in high school. Get certified. Marry young. Both work for a few years. Pay off the house and put money in the bank. Start making babies.

[ - ] NumbDigger 0 points 3.2 yearsFeb 19, 2022 05:59:30 ago (+0/-0)

Land. No contest.

Wife and children come first. The next generation is more important than the previous.

The best prep is people, but...

You might need to be the place they have to go.

[ - ] 1Icemonkey 0 points 3.2 yearsFeb 18, 2022 21:41:56 ago (+0/-0)

Leaving.

[ - ] rhy -1 points 3.2 yearsFeb 18, 2022 22:18:15 ago (+1/-2)

Fuck your wife and her family. Get the land. Then make everyone move where you are or they can suck a dick. Seriously. These days society has no values. It's up to us!
