ThotPatrol in a Fantasy Book

submitted by GrayDragon to BookQuotes 2.2 yearsFeb 15, 2022 02:30:36 ago (+17/-1)     (BookQuotes)

I was thinking about posting this in /v/ThotPatrol, but you illiterate neanderthals would probably complain ...

Background: This well-written book series is The Belgariad. Ce'Nedra is a clever but highly conceited Imperial princess that is a newly minted queen in a foreign land by marriage. A war is scheduled, and so she wants armor, but she is extremely small-framed. The master armorer, Delban, who cares not for even royal titles, does not want to waste real armor for a small girl. Finally, they agree on ceremonial armor. Ce'Nedra comes to pick it up ...

Ce'Nedra, however, was staring disapprovingly at the breastplate Delban had made for her. It would quite obviously fit -- too well. "Didn't you forget something?" she asked him.

He picked the breastplate up in his big hands and examined it. "It's all there," he told her. "Front, back, all the straps to hook them together. What else did you want?"

"Isn't is a trifle -- understated?" Ce'Nedra suggested delicately.

"It's made to fit," he replied. "The understatement isn't my fault."

"I want it a little more --" She made a sort of curving gesture with her hands.

"What for?"

"Never mind what for. Just do it."

"What do you plan to put in it?"

"That's my business. Just do it the way I told you to."

He tossed a heavy hammer down on his anvil. "Do it yourself," he told her bluntly.

Alas David Eddings had a Stronk liberal wahman wife.

The more books he wrote the more over powered and entitled the female characters got and the more they bullied and weakened the male characters.

By the time they wrote a husband and wife collaboration it was unreadable woke garbage and I abandoned my favorite teenage author.

Want to read the best masculine modern fantasy series ever?

Start the Malazan book of the fallen.

Can take time to pick up the writing style but it's just mind blowing

I already noticed the Mary Sue aspect about Polgara, and she is just getting stronger. I'm almost finished book four of 13.

Nonetheless, his writing is fantastic. A book an a half (about 450 pages) was just the "heroes" walking down one fucking road. That takes talent to make that interesting.

Anyway, I am going to finish this series.

Malazan, huh? What is wrong with the "writing style"? I just read an interlude book for fun where the author had good ideas, but holy shit could I write better than him while fifteen vodkas deep.

Anyway, recorded Malazan and your username on my list in case I have questions. Cheers! And thanks.

you're gonna like Polgara's ending situation, its quite the opposite of a mary sue, and I'm not spoiling it trust me.

For a split second, I almost raged. Okay, not a spoiler! Thanks!

E: SPOILER for no one cares.

...

I just passed the part where Garion, Belgarath, and Silk finished escaping, and Polgara turns into pure hell destroying everything around her. Pinpoint accuracy lightning bolting teacups, saucers, furniture, just blasting everything in sight. All allies running away from her except Ce'Nedra. It was pretty cool.

I have an Italian friend that does not like to read. He read the entire Conan series by whoever the hell it was. I don't plan on reading those books.

The Count of Monte Cristo is also fairly based. He is betrayed, framed and imprisoned. He breaks out, finds a massive fortune and systematically destroys his enemies under a new persona. You think he wants his girl back, but nope. Skank is used goods now. Lands a smoking hot, subservient princess instead. lol

I have a solid friend that is not liked by many of my other friends even though he is awesome. Sneaky and deceptive and tricky (not a jew), but I know how to play him. His favorite book is "The Count of Monte Cristo." That book is so on my list of books to read.

Great book, but honestly the movie made in the 2000ish range is nearly just as good. It's better in some ways and worse in others, but it hits the high notes and gives an incredibly satisfying finale. I found many parts of the book boring for various reasons, but other parts far better than the movie.

If you just want the main plot, watch the movie.

Ignore the movie. The book is one of the best revenge stories of all time. Also, it’s a translation from the original French. The quality of prose is very impressive. It really shows how lazy we’ve become with language.
