Berlin and Paris are worth it for the museums, but not much else. For example, in Berlin there's a museum showing the joint collections of the east and west german Luftwaffe, it's the only place I know of in the world where you can see an almost complete collection of NATO and Soviet aircraft side by side.
Other than that I agree, wouldn't restrict myself to Provence though. France isn't really a country, it's a collection of countries. Brittany/Normany is another world, I'd imagine Alsace is too.
Paris is indeed disgusting, and one should totally avoid capitals. However, I did like Rome and Athens because I like history and architecture. (But omg the fucking pakis and blacks in those cities, sickening).
But yes, Tuscany was indeed more peaceful and beautiful with better food. Austria is really amazing though. All of it.

It doesn't have to be perfect, but it will open up more doors, and the locals will appreciate the attempt. Maybe not so much the French, because they can be assholes. But most other people love it when tourists try to learn their language.
I remember when my family got to Paris in the early 2000s ( I think literally 2000, anyways). We met a family that my Dad knew who lived there, and we were going to take the Metro of legend. They tried to convince us to take a cab. (They had a car, but it was too small for 10 total people). We were like, whatever, and they were like ok up to you, but don't talk to any black people. I thought they were super racist. So we took the metro and then I realized I was racist.
Another trip: Metro again: My gf and I smelled I think what is the worst person I've ever smelled. it was so bad Frenchmen were getting off the train to take the next one. My gf (medical profession) said that he smelled like he was dying in addition to all the urine and feces. She didn't think he had long left.
Whenever I think of Europe now I remember that picture I saw of German high school students. Two blonde girls with forced smiles sitting at a lunch table with three dark black African refugees that looked like they could be 30 years old.
