I'm currently an assembly technician at a large semiconductor company that has potential for a great path, steady income, bonuses, stock purchase plan, etc. Quite a lot actually but my pay is $19. 15% differential, I work at night, so it is $21.85. I get 15 hours of OT bi weekly, and when I sign up for OT I can rack it up to 35 at $32.75. I'll move to test by this year which will pay me $5 dollars more. They keep rumoring a wage adjustment because people are leaving droves.
Today I had an interview for a pretty big car dealership in the north of my state for potential to make 90-140k a year. Downside is a lot of less benefits than the other job. And they kind of sounded tight ass about things saying how hard you need to work but it's worth it for the money.
I don't have to work very hard at my current job. But I'm the most valuable asset on my team that has yet to be moved into a position that pays higher.
I did high end restaurant for 6 years but quit on the day covid shut down everything. So I understand the customer service bullshit part if I were to deal with car dealership people. They said the past two years were the best years for their sales and they see the market crash coming as a good thing for them.
Just weighing options here and I'd like some goats opinions
Last time I bought a car, I walked past an office in the dealership and overheard the manager chewing one of the sales guys out for not being pushy enough. Threatening to send him home.
Free Cocaine addiction for a job in a dying industry for "Sales Pitched" guy.
Why would you ever throw away a useful skill job for a potential shekel.
How many car salesmen do you know? The breed of conmen that hold that role do not last long and never share their my life changed for the better stories for a reason.
You have to be able to not care about people and see them as a close, not as a family or a person.
My brother did it for a summer, and hated the fact that he was getting people to buy a vehicle that they probably couldn't afford but talked them into it by being friendly and persuasive, to the point where they thanked him for what he viewed as ruining their finances.
Money was good because he was a closer, but he quit to go work as a bartender at one high end place and one dive bar. Preferred that setting with people, ruining their lives one drink at a time rather than all at once.
Won't happen. Has not happened to anyone at the job. They asked my friend what they could do to get him to stay. He was like are you serious? Pay me more. They said they can't and well that's an easy decision from there.
It has good and bad sides. Culture of where you work is huge. You won't make shit your first 3 years, but if you stick with it, it can be very lucrative. Older people still want to touch cars before they buy them, so if the industry is dying like someone mentioned, it is a slow death.
Lot of phone work, lots of hearing no for an answer. But you don't have to be greasy to sell cars. Be honest, and follow the process.

Restaurant made me upright and feel superior. Now in assembly I feel relaxed and confident.
