There were several insurgent groups in Iraq that used the term Mujahideen. Mujahideen is a catch all Muslim term for anyone engaged in violent Jihad.

I was making a joke, but I always thought it was the original group bin Ladin was a part of or founded to fight the commies out of northern Afghanistan. So it was used in other parts? Cool.

Bin Laden never fought anyone in Afghanistan, he was born with fucked up kidneys that only got worse as he got older. The guys who fought the Russians in Afghanistan were largely what became the US allied Northern Alliance. Mujahideen was just used as a catch all term used to describe anti Soviet fighters in Afghanistan.

Fun fact, the AKM/AK-47 rifles used by the Afghan Mujahideen to fight the Soviets came from Israeli stockpiles that were captured from Syrians and Egyptians during the Yom Kippur war in 1973.
