Lynyrd Skynyrd: A mother tells her son to be a simple kind of man. Respect your elders. Neil Young: A young faggot lips off to an old man about being a lot like he was. Recognize young faggots.

I would love to kick his nuts up to his neck. That money grubbing scab glorified drug use and the absurd and grotesque idea that hateful and constant disparagement of everything was intellectually insightful.
He wrote Needle and the Damage Done that decried drug use, specifically heroin.
He wrote This Notes for You that decried artists selling their music for commercial use.
He got sued by his record label for making a non-Neil Young record.
He really was the anti-establishment guy in the 70s and 80s.
In the 2000s and 2010s he started selling his music to companies for $$ and started running in upper political circles and turned into a irredeemable cunt.
In his mind, he's being a good little socialist by doing his part and that safety is greater than freedom because that's socialism in a nutshell. The cognitive dissonance in his head has to be kicking in strong, because he always did his own thing as an individualistic-oriented artist, so he is striking out at the 'big guy', i.e. Spotify CEO in order to show that he is still anti-establishment.
I'd hate to be in his head right now, because it has to be confusing AF in there.
You don't get it, and that's a real shame. It doesn't matter WHAT they say about drugs, it's that they're saying it. And he used the bullshit of "gritty urban street drama" imagery to do it.
You don't seriously think Neil Young's stupid song ever stopped anyone from getting high do you? We know stuff like that makes it attractive to certain people. Too many certain people.
AS for him selling out to commercial interests, he did that the first time he signed a contract. People don't work for free. The idea was that anyone could aspire to make as much money as they could as long as they pay their taxes. The ones who weren't interested in getting rich didn't have to. Those who can't work to support themselves were given financial support from those taxes.
The greed for those tax dollars by politicians buying votes destroyed that system, and their protection of large tax avoiders in favor of bleeding the little guy, but that's what Neil Young wants because he's a very stupid man who could play some instruments, and is easily led by people with more money than him.
It doesn't matter WHAT they say about drugs, it's that they're saying it.
Wait, so writing a song "Don't Do Drugs, they will kill you and ruin your life" is the same as a song "Do drugs! They are awesome!"? I don't get it, you're right.

I do not know his intent on writing that song. Did he watch a bunch of his Laurel Canyon friends OD or disappear from the stage of life, and write about HIS loss? Or was he trying to steer others away from it? He certainly moved out of laurel Canyon into Toponga Canyon, I believe, relatively quickly, as he didn't like the Zappa House style scene of "do drugs". If interested, check out Dave McGowan's articles on the laurel Canyon scene. Quite interesting all the military inttelligence types going there "organically."

Fair point, but as an artist, if he could make his art AND get paid for it through a record contract, why would you not? His point in This Notes for You was that you wrote a song that meant something to you, and to sell it off as a jingle for Budweisier is a mockery of the art you created.
You have any comments on my take on why he went after Spotify or him being an irredeemable cunt?
Neil Young's or any other musician or artist's intent has nothing whatsoever to with the product because the product stands alone.
what young told himself about his artistic purity is only what young told himself about his artistic purity. He can tell himself something different 5 minutes later. If you bought a recording of his music, that's all you bought. He wrote lyrics that sounded good to him. So what?
He went after spotify because he's an egomaniac and he needs to suck up to the jews that own the recording industry and radio. He wants them to play his songs for the royalties.

Wait, he wants them to play his music for royalties by not allowing them to play his music for royalties? I cannot follow this twisted logic.
