Unfortunately, localization isn't viable in most people/places.
How do you manage resources, ie get things you need and sell things you have excess? It takes interacting with other groups.
Essentially this becomes tribalism, and as everyone is well aware, tribes are not very strong against coordinated opposition.
Small companies get bought out - or just outcompeted and crushed - by bigger companies. Same will happen with small systems like this if there is no larger entity encompassing everything. Which then boils down to "will that larger entity allow this to continue"?
