There was an arsenic based pesticide called paris green that was used before DDT. It's why people got paralyzed mostly in the late summer/fall after a harvest. Eating apples at the time was like playing Russian roulette.

It's tricky, more of a science. You need enough powder to leave the barrel but not enough to exit the apple.
